    Hi,
I have to make the hard decision which nb I should buy.

    Main differences:
    HP NX8220: 2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, ATI X600
Acer Travelmate 8101: 1,6 GHz; 512 MB RAM, ATI X700

Could you recommend one of it and why :)
I have red so many articles and forums but still can not decide :(

    Thanks a lot
    Nils

When considering purchasing a notebook the HP NX8220 (1.73GHz, 512MB RAM, 128MB ATI X600) came out on top of the list, ahead of the Asus Z63A. My search for a notebook began at the Acer 1691, but it quickly got taken off of the list when I read about the quality control issues with the first batch of their Travelmate 8104. Whether those issues have been fixed by now, I'm not sure, but I am very satisfied with my NX8220.

If those two models are the same price, I would choose the NX8220 (again) in a heartbeat; I'm not a gamer, but I don't think that the X700 is a huge improvement over the X600. Here are my reasons for going with the HP, in no particular order:

    - great battery life (> 4 hours, watching movies)
    - excellent build quality (solid keyboard, no dead pixels on display)
    - better customer support than Acer (My NX8220 came with a free upgrade from the 1 year warranty to the 3 year warranty)

My only knock against the NX8220 so far is that the display isn't as good as the one I am used to (lower brightness and contrast ratio than my desktop LCD).

    Thanks for your review.

    What about you fan?

I have often read that is on the whole time. That wouldn't bother me, if it spins very low and calm when the system is not under heavy usage.
Can you tell me your opinion about the loudness of your system?

    Hi,

i'm also a recent nx8220 owner for a few months......and i'd haveot say the machine is wispeer quite. I'm not a gmaer by any means, but occasssionaly i play command and conquer....machine is still quite, nothing you can hear distinctly. During normal usage, u wont even know its on, inless you put your hand by the vent or put your ear, right next to it. As for the high pitch noise, others have been noticing.....i havent heard it yet. Hope this helps, the nx8220, is a great computer, ive really enjoyed it so far.

    Oziris,

I have an nx8220 as well, and I should be releasing a review of the unit in the next few days.

Regarding the LCD, I'm sad to say that the LCD is not as good that the one's on the Sony. Most Sony models today use their X-Brite technology for a brighter LCD. You can tell if it has X-Brite by the gloss of the LCD (high gloss, very reflective).

The HP LCD also seems to have a huge anti-glare coating or something that seems to make the colors look "dirty". Mainly looking at pure white backgrounds.

From the 2 units you listed, even though the LCD is slightly under par, plus the other issues that have been mentioned, I'd still recommend this unit.
