Just bought HP Nw8240 (ati mobility 5000v, 1900*1200) and the screen on AC is dull, dim etc. The manual adjustments (brightness, gamma, contrast) do not work so that I can be satisfied with the display quality. I have read the topics regarding similar models (8220, 8230) and it seems that perhaps it can be light sensor problem so that one can need to turn the light sensor off and the screen would work with normal brightness, sharpness etc. then. If so then could anyone tell me please - how can i turn the light sensor off? I am just starting to think of applying to HP because of the bad screen which is very annoying. I can not read, watch pictures, play games normally...![]()

Ambient Light Sensor
The notebook features a built-in light sensor that enables the notebook to automatically adjust the screen brightness according to the ambient lighting level. When the lighting of your environment changes, the ambient light sensor detects the change and automatically adjusts the screen brightness.
You can turn the ambient light sensor on and off in 3 ways
■ By pressing fn+f11
■ Through the Quick Launch Buttons software
■ Using the Quick Launch Buttons software notification area icon
✎To turn on and off the ambient light sensor using the Quick Launch Buttons software or the software icon in the notification area, the Quick Launch Buttons software must be installed.
You can turn on and off the ambient light sensor using the Quick Launch Buttons software:
1. Open the Quick Launch Buttons software:
■ Select Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Quick Launch Buttons icon.
or
■ Double-click the Quick Launch Buttons software icon in the notifications area.
2. Select the Advanced tab.
3. Select or deselect the Enable Ambient Light Sensor check box.
4. Select Apply, and then select OK. -
Yes, that helps. Many thanks for operativity, You saved such big amount of my nerve cells..
Actually I should put extra brightness by fn+f10.And fn+f11 just gives additional benefit to screen. Plus I added some brightness and gamma in display settings, so now screen is ok.
Thanks!! -
Glad to help - have fun!

Hi,
I'm considering getting this model, maybe you can help answer some questions I have.
Besides the fact that 1900x1200 is possibly too high a resolution for 15,4", I've read somewhere on the Internet (for example, here: http://www.laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=99&part=full&page=12) that the "brightness and viewing angle is poor", and it is supposed to "run hot and loud".
What's your experiences with it so far?
Thanks for sharing in advance!
