I just got an Omen a few days ago. I like mine too! Haven't had any issues to speak of yet.

The only things I don't particularly care for are:

the red backlight and the red WASD keys, as if we couldn't find them without them being red. I kind of hope/wish that I could swap the keyboard out for one that's not so flashy.

    and

It's also quite the fingerprint magnet. Mine looks like I've been eating greasy pizza all over the keyboard and wrist pad.

So on the other hand, the keyboard is nice to type on.

The fans aren't loud and annoying as yet. I previously had a Clevo/Sager and it was such a pain in the butt with fans and noise. Playing any game on my old Sager/Clevo caused the fans to go wild and be extremely noisy.

The screen is very nice. Crisp, clear, and bright.

Despite it being ~8 pounds, it's comfortable sitting on my lap for extended periods of time.

I still need to figure out how to open up my HP Omen, I have the model w200na- earlier model design to the dragon red style gaming laptop out at the moment. I want to upgrade the SSD m.2 drive to a 512 GB one. 128 GB is to small I feel. Any tips or suggestions on how to pry open the HP Omen 17 earlier model would be greatly appreciated. :)

I think I finally found the correct thread!

I recently bought the "OMEN by HP 15-ax250wm Laptop" on clearance for what I think is a crazy good deal. It was $499, but then it was a display model so it came out to $486 after tax!

The specs are as follows: (speccy)
    Operating System
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit
    CPU
    Intel Core i7 7700HQ @ 2.80GHz 48 °C
    Kaby Lake 14nm Technology
    RAM
    12.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1197MHz (17-17-17-39)
    Motherboard
    HP 8259 (U3E1) 53 °C
    Graphics
    Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
    Intel HD Graphics 630 (HP)
    4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (HP) 39 °C
    ForceWare version: 388.13
    SLI Disabled
    Storage
    931GB Hitachi HGST HTS721010A9E630 (SATA) 27 °C
    Optical Drives
    No optical disk drives detected
    Audio
    Realtek High Definition Audio

Any tips for a newcomer to this machine? Anything I should uninstall right away? Plenty of HP bloatware and automatically installing games to sort through. Anyone have experience with undervolt or overclocking with this? I'll start going through the huge amount of info in this thread :D

I'm going to be adding in an m.2 SSD for the OS. This is the first time I've used windows in a few years on a standard HDD and it is jarring!
    Thx!

I benched it a bit. It struggles to hit 60 FPS on Rise of the Tomb Raider, but maxes out MGSV:The Phantom Pain. Everything that wasn't super intensive works amazing as well. Really satisfied for what I paid.

When I looked at the warranty info, it says I only have 10 months remaining. Is there a way to have the warranty registered to my account and updated to my actual purchase date (like Dell does, previous alienware owner).

Overall I am really liking the laptop. Keyboard is nice and material isn't as receptive to finger prints. It also doesn't look insane like my alienware did! I plan on using this for environmental work with GIS software and some moderate gaming.

I just got HP Omen 17 with RX580 and other than no SSD I love it. It was a great laptop and have enjoyed using it. Will eventually get an m.2 NVME ssd at some point.

    Hi there!
One of the laptops I am thinking to purchase is this:
    2PJ77EA - HP Omen X 17-ap001nn, 17.3" FHD AG IPS 120Hz Intel Core i7 7820HK QC,

    16GB, 1TB + 256GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB G-SYNC, Shadow black - aluminium,

    WIN10, 1Y+2YCP

It is available for order, however I have found no reviews of this unit. Does anyone have it?

7820HK CPU is nice, but is the cooling good enough, can it hold 4.3 Ghz OC clocks without throttling and burning the laptop?
I have heard that HP overclocked the GTX 1080, is this true and can it hold those clocks without power or thermal throttling?
Is the CPU clock stable like with MSI laptops or it is jumping around (for example in Fire Strike benchmark) ?

@DRevan I took a look at the Omen X's service manual, and from the photos the cooling system looks pretty good. It's got 4 screws each for the CPU / GPU, but it's still a unified heatsink. My guess is it would be on par with what you can get out of an Alienware 17, provided the bios doesn't have any issues that get in the way of overclocking. I would also suspect the MSI GT75VR / GT73VR would do even better because MSI tends to build a really nice power delivery system in their laptop motherboards.

I got myself an HP Omen 17 in China during the november 11th "singles day" sales for around the equivalent of USD1660, with i7 7700HQ, GTX1070 and a Toshiba XG5 256gbSSD. Loving the new design and enjoying the laptop a lot, but couple of bad points first, the screen had some pretty bad bleed bottom left and right and top left. Kind of annoyed me at first but then i got over it since i dont display much black screen on my day to day usage. The SSD had blistering 2800MB/S sequential read but a pretty low 370MB/S seq.write although i read it should be about 1000MB/S for write...no idea why but it doesnt affect my enjoyment much. Overall, very good so far, it's marginally bigger than my alienware M17x r4 which died recently and doesnt have the RGB keyboard lighting, but i still think it's pretty damn awesome. 5/7 would buy again!

    Hi Guys,

I own HP Omen 17t-w100 CTO for almost a year now, and wondering if I could possibly upgrade my memory from 16GB to somewhere higher perhaps?

Anyone know what's the max memory I can put into this 17t lappy?

Hey guys, enjoying the machine so far (HP 17 Omen w 7700hq and rx 580).

However, I need a way to turn the fans off completely. The system is ice cold, (CPU around 47C after using throttlestop to disable turbo and gpu at 41 to 43 after using msi afterburner to downclock it to 300 mhz), however a fan turns on periodically and its very annoying, and unnecessary.

    Any solution to this?

You may be able to use NoteBook FanControl to override the EC and create your own custom fan curve. A profile exists for older Omen's which may work with the newer one. If it didn't, then you would need to use a tool like R/W Everything to build a profile with some experimenting. Be aware that entering bad values in the EC registers can sometimes cause a lockup to occur so you would want to know what the procedure to reset the EC is before hand.

    Hello fellas,

New guy here. In about a week or so I will receive the new HP Omen X laptop with the current specs:

    - i7 7820HK
    - GTX 1080
    - 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
    - 16GB RAM
    - 120Hz Full HD GSYNC IPS

If you have any questions regarding this unit, please feel free to ask.

Now a question on my part. Regardless of the temperatures the CPU and GPU will obtain, I will most likely repaste the CPU and GPU with Liquid Metal (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut). Are (almost) all laptops repasteable(?) with Liquid Metal or do I have to watch out for some kind of material that gives a reaction with Liquid Metal?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the response. All I can achieve with throttlestop is the disabling of turbo boost , thus limiting freq to 2.8ghz on the i7 7700hq.

But a much bigger problem has arisen.

The laptop will not charge. While plugged in, it would say, plugged in, not charging. Till i would unplug it, it would drain to 7%, plug it back in , and then it would charge to 100% and after that again stop charging. Some time ago, it has completely stopped charging.

I know the charging brick is OK because I have a HP 8470p and I tried its charger and the same thing happens. The charge indicator in windows comes on for a few seconds, and then again it disappears leaving the battery to drain in freefall.

Can't figure out where the problem is.

Its possible a component in the charging circuitry has failed. I would suggest contacting HP support and describing the problem to them. They may try shipping a new AC Adapter to you first, or need you to send the system in for the motherboard to be replaced. You could try re-seating the power in connector ( page 59 in the service manual) but if its an issue with the motherboard it will have to be sent in. If you did install a M.2 drive in your system I would remove it before shipping it so the drive doesn't end up disappearing because it wasn't in the original system build.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was dreading these issues, but thankfully, I reset the laptop using windows reset and everything seems to be working. I did get a new charging cable. But it was a software issue. It is possible that the windows 10 creators update.

Much happier with the machine up and running. The only issue now is the fan speed on the laptop. NBFC seems to have no effect. The CPU has turbo disabled through throttletop (nothing over 2.8 ghz), although still cannot set multiplier manually, has no effect when turned on.

On the other hand, using MSI Afterburner, gpu clock speed and vRAM are set to 300 (lowest it can go) and around 39c, but the fans still kick in after every few minutes. Extremely annoying in a silent room.

Hey! I bought mine from the US but using it in China as well. You got it only slightly expensive but still a good price compared to what I've seen. I was happy till they crippled steam community here. Deeply annoying. Any suggestions for ping? I get horrendous lag in some games with low player counts here (rts titles)

Random aside, but I've found the 120Hz panel in my Omen will overclock to 128Hz.
Testufo and testufo frameskipping test seem to verify it does actually run 128 approx a second, and WoW seems to lock around 127.7 FPS if Vsync engages. Not sure if it breaks Gsync at all. Not massive boost, but certainly a nice additional note.

130/144 unfortunately not useable, and just garble :)

Got my parents one of the 019DX Omens. Was a really nice laptop, but ended up having to return. (long story, not worth the time)
Think it was $820 w/taxes, and I am wondering if I made the right decision. Worked pretty hard selling their old machine, so was pretty aggravated I had to take the Omen back after all that.
One thing I did not like about it (with the 10mins I had with it), was the incredibly lackluster screen. Curious if was just the unit we had, or is typical.

    hi there,

I own a HP Omen - 17t Laptop 7t-w100 CTO, however I am planning to upgrade the hard drive.
    I bought this lappy included with 512GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD

now my question is, can this lappy take regular 2.5" SSD as its 2nd Hard drive?
Does it have the proper slot and place for it?

also, the charger that came with this lappy is BIG and weight a ton... is there a possible HP or aftermarket charger replacement that's more convenient for traveling...

    really appreciated...

Yes it should have a 2.5 slot but you may have to get the necessary accessories separately from HP if the laptop originally only came with a M.2 512gb SSD. Only way to find out is to phone HP directly or open it up yourself and see. Good luck sir :)

I'm battling with overheating while gaming on the i7 7700hq version and I have the pavilion looking HP. Not the latest one. Gaming performance is amazing, max temp on the GPU was 72 C° degrees and it's a 1070. Fantastic, just need to try lower the temp of the CPU as it always spikes to 98 Degrees C°

With a big power bank you should have the 1060 or 1070 version right

    Yes it's a 1070 version

But still to my question, there isn't really any smaller charger that is more comfy to carry around than what I have now, is there?! I really dont mind if smaller size charger will make my charging time longer than the original one.

And regarding the existance of the 2.5" SSD Slot, do I really have to call them? I mean anybody here that have the same product number i.e. 17t-w100 CTO as I do perhaps that knows and have experience with this?

    Thanks in advance...

    Does anyone have the:
    OMEN by HP 17-an019na
It would cost me £1540, about the same as an Alienware 15 R3 with identical specs for the most part.
But I have a few questions. Is the thermal throttling issue that is present in the 15 r3, a problem the Omen suffers with?
Also is the included 250gb SSD NVMe or Sata?

I picked one of these up this week ( ap020nr ) because Microcenter had an open box model marked down to $1700.

    7820k, 1080, 16GB (2x8) and the 120hz screen.

Games really well, no issues in anything I've played and the KB is top notch. It does have a crappy Realtek wifi card that will need to be swapped out, otherwise I'm digging it.

Haven't opened it up to repaste because I'm not having any thermal issues, but did use XTU to undervolt by 100mv and set all cores to 4.1. No stability issues as of yet.

I plan to upgrade to 16x2 2800 XMP modules, if I can find them.

The Realtek Card is a pain to replace, it's under the mb.

Yeah, saw that in the reviews. Not a huge deal, I worked for Dell WUR for years and have torn down more laptops than I can count.

Did a little bit of tweaking and upped my FireStrike score to 17.6. I'm pretty happy here. No throttling at all when playing pretty intensive games(Wildlands, Ark, etc).

Anyone running the new (or relatively new) 17t? I got one, 16gb Ram, 256 SSD, I7-7700HQ, GTX 1070, and was wondering what other people are running like temp wise. I am considering repasting.

Sorry if this is out of your topic, but I'm just curious is your charger bigger in size wise (say about 10"ish x 5.5"ish)
    And quite heavy too?!

My laptop feels like it's getting hot while gaming. I had to use throttlestop to reduce turbo to 3.3 GHz with 4 cores active instead of 3.4. Temps are between 85 and 91 Degrees C°. Is this acceptable for the old model HP Omen 17 i7 7700HQ? I also undervolted to -120 mV

Idle: CPU between 45 and 50°C degrees and load 85 to 96°C you will be looking at.
Idle: GPU 50°C and Load 75°C to 85°C degrees.

HP is known to run hot and the fans only start to go to max load when Temp of laptop CPU go to the 90's C°
