    So they have a RX 580 entry-level model and a 1070 high-end model? Interesting.

The linked article states that the Omen 15 will have Max-Q graphics (presumably 1060 Max-Q). Will be interesting to see if it can outperform the regular 1050TI in the same notebook. Interesting that it is not in the HP chart.

Looks like the PCH has dedicated heatsink in 17" while 15" it is not cooled at all

The 17" looks thick enough to house an MXM; too bad they are not going full HK CPU with that kind of space (judging by USB A size and DVD drive, about 1.7" thick). Heck if they dropped the DVD drive. they could probably have Desktop CPU (Even Ryzen) and MXM GPU. Would be amazing if OEM wasn't scared to do this.

RX 550 price tag is retarded. The 580 one sort of makes sense due to the SSD and extra RAM but still. RX 550 model should either be a 560 or be dropped to 700$ max.

It looks interesting. At least its not a carbon copy of a Pavilion this time. Hope the build quality is good

Also the prices for the 15 inch versions are retarded. $1599 for the 1050ti version are u serious?. Also the 1050 versions shouldnt be over $1000 at all, thats goes for the 17inch versions too.

Yeah I hope the prices stay at the current OMEN price range. If they get a bit more quiet than previous generations and stay relatively cheap I will buy one. Hope they get released soon.

Relative to other HP products, the 2017 Omen lineup will have its own distinctive design across the board. From the looks of it, the 2017 HP Pavilion Power notebook refreshes will take on a design that's similar to the 2016 Envy line:

    http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-power---quad-w--2gb-gfx-touch-optional-1gk62av-1

Looking at slated retail prices for the 2017 Pavilion and Omen notebook refreshes, they are expected to increase compared to the 2016 models. Base configuration prices are modestly higher, and the cost to upgrade to higher options appear to be quite steep from there. :(

That does not sound to hopeful. I really think HP bites their own ass if they set the prices to high. If they want to compete with the giants in gaming laptops I really think they need to keep their competative pricing.

It does not look like it. Think the new design looks really nice. Pretty hyped. Problem is that I need a new laptop now so I hope its not to long wait for them to be released

Ehrm... what exactly looks nice? Have people lost any sense of aesthetics? They are ****ing ugly. Like the new Lenovo Legion, Clevo, or the new MSI GE seires. Can't we have decent looking high end laptops? Without all these ugly red "gamer colors", and without such an awful edged and spiky design? Who designs this ****? Looks worse than laptops 20 years ago.

It is a cross between Clevo's p870 chassy and the cooling from an older ASUS, then slimmed down

finally they learnt something from all the criticism throughout the past years and did surprisingly lot of things right this time...
no omen-branded pavillion, but a dedicated omen chassis is already a huge leap forward. though i doubt it is of good quality since the pricing indicates cheap plastic. also, this lenovo legion styled display lid, as well as the edgy top side with sharp corners are quite ugly, but thats just my personal opinion and no deal-breaker.

spec-wise they really look good, omen 15 of course only if it is true that the gtx1060 (6gb of course) is available as well, contrary to their own marketing slides... otherwise its just another hp-like fail.

and thunderbolt 3 being optionable is just dumb, considering there are just very few markets in the world where one can customize hp notebooks, so eg. whole europe still needs to be lucky to find a suitable pre-configured model. though theres still risk of it being gimped even if it has tb3 if they chose a low-power tb3 controller that just uses 2 instead of 4 pcie lanes, which leaves one with tb3 on the paper but with 50% of tb3's (=tb2 speeds) speeds in reality, like asus did with their gl502vm - well, they saved some $3 per piece in production!

most jacks, especially essential ones except for the power jack, on the left side - took a while to grasp that, hp...

and, of course, theres still some risk that hp again put abysmally bad displays like they did on previous pavillionomens.
lets hope the cooling is good.

though all this comes too late for me, i jumped from hp to the competition a month ago for the first time since 2004 because i waited too long for hp to release an acceptable omen.

Agreed. One thing i like about HP laptops is that you can always get a great deal compared to the competition but with these prices barely anyone will buy one because they can get a cheaper laptop with similar specs. Look at the price for the Omen with the AMD 550 RX, now thats a rip off

Just had a look at it:

Eh??? Whose stupid idea was it to extend the lid, so it blocks the exhaust vents? Man... that's retarded. Even worse than in various Asus models. By that I quote another member of the forum:

Yeah, that's the only way to explain it really. Because some stupid "designer" thought, the exhaus vents looked ugly, so they covered it. Ugly? Wtf... HP Omen and Pavilion had one of the nicest looking exhaust vents. I mean look at that:
The exhaust area is totally unobtrusive and integrates nicely into the chassis. Now with the new Pavilion refresh it does not only look worse, but there is a high chance thermals are worse as well.

Edit: yeah ok, on second thought I could imagine, they also wanted to "remove" the protruding axes. Though they never seemed to me an aesthetic problem in the first place...

Not sure about that. The envy 15 also has its exhausts at the back. I doubt it's different on the Pavilion.

So depending on the opening angle, the exhausts are partly or fully blocked.

Besides... when reading this review about the Envy 15 with the same extended lid https://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Envy-15-as133cl-Notebook-Review.196536.0.html the lid props up the whole notebook on the backside, when opening it. Is this good? I don't know - especially when I read this " Perhaps the more disappointing aspect of the chassis is the lid itself. When opened, the lid will almost always teeter and will even continue to move slightly when typing."
Yeah... and does that also mean, I need to open the lid at a fixed angle so it's stable enough?? I don't know how people use laptops, but I often adjust the screen angle depending how I sit. So yeah... this extended lid yet offers another doubt about its design (the same design as the Pavilion 15 refresh).

Talked to HP and the updated version of HP Omen is arriving sometime this summer. That is for europe, dont know if it is the same for the US. So my options right now is to go for the MSI GT72VR or wait for the HP Omen. Only thing that talks against the MSI is the design. Not my cup of tea at all

Why are these your 2 options? Not considering anything from Clevo, Gigabyte or Asus?

on that display lid topic - looking at the new omen, it looks like there is no protective screen in front of it. but if the new pavillion is based on the envy line, this would mean they have a protective screen in front of the display.

...which makes the lid of the new pavillion in this point superior than the new omen's. i always loved the old envy 17 3d's protective screen in front of the display, and even more the one of the mbp, since it is even tighter and feels sturdier and better quality.

It has nothing to do with build quality or "protecting the screen," It has to do with choice of screen. The Envy line have glossy touch surfaces, the Omen line have matte anti-reflective screens (preferred by gamers). They may offer Touchscreen on the Omen if you like that glossy surface.

Either way both lines are relatively cheaply made. If you wan't premium build quality from HP you have get something from their Spectre or top end business line (elite-book I think)

Somehow, I still like the design of the first gen, although have to agree that having all ports at the end, though good, is still painful for attaching anything from power brick to pen drive. The chiselled edges along with metal lid, which is full black, gave it an elegant look. People would. It giggle or smile even if I carried it to a place where I would use it for other things apart from gaming. The latest version has too much going on, which speaks loud for it being a "gaming laptop".. my 2 cents..

I actually tried both Asus and Clevo. The Clevo was to loud and the fans are to high pitched which makes them more annoying than needed. I also tried an Asus G752VS which was good in most aspects but the keyboard was not good at all and the design of it made it feel so fragile. Also thought the fan curve was way to aggressive when not gaming.

i hate the WASD ugly key trend.... like this omen, acer, and my ugly asus.

Do gamers really need those keys highlighted, like they don't know where they are?

The highlighted keycaps really stick out like a sore thumb.

Yeah I also find it highly uneccesarry. You feel it with your fingers, no need for highlighted keys. Its even more ugly when the keyboards have RGB lighting combined with theese highlighted often red WASD keys.

Now the new HP OMEN laptops are availaible here in Sweden were I live. But they are super expensive. 2500 dollars for the 17inch 7700hq Nivida 1070 version. Thats way more than the MSI GT72VR and the Asus g752vs costs here.

    Sad sad sad sad

By the looks of it, I like everything about the new new updated versions apart from the red WASD keys.

Contacted HP Sweden about buying black replacement keys but that wasn't possible. Anyone got any bright idéa where to/how to get black replacements?

I would assume Asus uses interchangeable keyboard sizes for ease of manufacture. Maybe you can buy replacement keys from another line and pop them in

First HP I've liked since my Dv7t 7000 Quad. Hopefully they release it for sale soon and there is an initial steep discount coupon or sale. Based on past experience with HP, promised delivery dates will slide once an order is placed so be prepared for that (unless they've gotten their act together in that regard).

    First impressions by the offerings:

    1. Zero 4th of July discounts on either the 15" or 17" new omen models
    2. PCWorld review stated the 15" model with 1060 would support Nvidia Max Q but no mention of which one of the 2 15" models available have it.
    3. Marketing materials and reviews available on the web listed the 17" model with an optical drive but none available on any of the 3 17" models available.

I am in the market for a new laptop soon, but aren't prepared to jump on one out of the gate.

Update on my above post regarding first impressions.

    1. No change.
    2. Had a chat conversation with an HP sales rep who told me that both the 15" and 17" models with the GTX 1060 GPU support Max Q technology. I asked her to point me to something in writing but she couldn't at this time. Would be an interesting option to get 1080 performance with a 1060 GPU though.
    3. Sales rep also stated the 17" model DOES include a DVD drive even though the sales information on the configurable systems states it does not.

Thinking of placing an order tonight for a 17" with a 1060. They have a 30 day return policy and the sales rep sent me an email transcript of our conversation so if she was incorrect on either the optical drive info or about the Max Q tech I always have that to fall back on to validate reasoning for a return.

    Les.
