Well that is not true in this case, on the new Omen the issue is idle temps of 50 degrees , whistling fans and fans that spins up and down the moment you open Chrome. Its just a poorly made laptop. PR poorly made is to harsh. It is quite nice otherwise.

If your card is idling at P2 or P0 then 50c idle on the CPU is pretty normal. Especially without all the bloatware removed.

Just ordered mine today, should have it by the end of the week!
I got the 15.6" with GTX1050ti and thunderbolt.
Wanted to go for the GTX1060 to be VR ready but the sku is not out yet, and it is many hundreds more and you only get a Max-Q, not the full 1060.

Have you had a chance to try it out yet? I can only find reviews of the 1060 configuration, and I'm curious how the 1050ti version handles heat and how noisy it is while idle and during load. Also interested in battery life and overall performance!

    Would really appreciate it! Cheers

The 1050ti version will be less noisy and it'll handle heat better because its a lot weaker than the 1060GTX and it doesnt use G-SYNC which means the IGP wont be disabled which you'll gain more battery life.

There is an Intel HD graphics driver on the 1050Ti model support page.

I know that but its still doubtful that HP wouldnt use optimus on their non G-sync Laptops.

According to the hardware maintenance manual on page 1 it uses Discrete Graphics only on the GTX 1060 and RX 550 models, and Hybrid Graphics on everything else.

I see, On manual they're using the Max-Q version of the 1060GTX not the regular one.

cpu is about 80c and gpu is around 70c .the left fan is spinning pretty good I would say at max the right fan is still on low .the max I have seen on the cpu after hours straight of prey was 85c and gpu 73c .
its a crappy pic but they changed the cooling a lot in the newer model

Hey, can you please check if this laptop has gen 2 thunderbolt 3 or not? The specs page seems to say id does, but there seems to be no post or mention of the Best Buy model having it.

Anyone owned the previous Omen 17 model that looks like a pavillion? Did anyone manage to take off the back cover (Base cover) without damaging or scratching the surface area by the side of the front? I've taken out the screws but it doesn't want to separate, what a pain to upgrade and replace parts on this HP Omen 17. There clips but how do un-clip them without breaking them... heard must use a credit card mostly? But won't that leave marks in the front... ahh HP why make our lives difficult. :( More insight from the previous owners of the before model who upgraded there parts in the Omen 17, please direct me in the right direction. Much appreciate your inputs. Thanks

Hey guys, finally got around to doing some testing on the RX 580 version of the machine.

Running PUBG (since its all the rage these days)

(EDIT: I used MSI Afterburner to lower the power limit just a bit, running the core at 1190 mhz, and was able to keep GPU temps at 72-73C and CPU at 70)

I'm seeing 80C on both CPU and GPU. Framerate is solid, though my settings are a mix of ultra draw distance and textures, and low foliage etc.

Attached are after burner pics of usage during PUBG.

TIP: You can use Throttlestop to disable the turboboost of the 7700HQ, which limits it to 2.8ghz, helping with temps.

    This machine runs hot.

Making another post separately so the images don't get mixed up. Temps and performance were much better in Company of Heroes 2 (one of the most demanding PC games if settings are high and a 4vs4 match is going on.

    With the specs:

    Omen 17 (2017 refresh)
    i7 7700HQ
    12gb ram
    1tb hdd
    Rx 580

I see about that on my cpu but the gpu on mine is around 75c max .the fan on the right side will kick in when the temps get to 90c kinda stupid to have it kick in so late never goes higher then 92 cpu after hours and hours of play on mine

We are all safe up till the Thermal Junction of the GPU and CPU which are both 100- 110 C Degrees I think. I know the 1070 is 100 C and the 7700HQ is also 100 C Degrees. Undervolting will have to be done if one is experiencing temps of 94-97 C Degrees as you cutting it finely. Laptop are designed to run hot not like Desktops.

Guys, I wish to ask if anyone else is facing this issue. I ordered a m2 nvme drive to use in the HP Omen 17. I tried removing the backplate, but 2 screws in the middel of the sides (on opposite sides) are nearly impossible to remove and i managed to strip them in futile attempts to unscrew them. (stripped screws are screws with the notches smoothed out, making it impossible for a screw driver to unscrew them).

The rest of the screws were easily removed. I would like to know if anyone else faced this issue, and also warn others attempting this. Obviously it differs from machine to machine, but since the middle screws bear the greatest amount of torsional stress, be very careful attempting to remove them.

Let me know if anyone else ran into this.

Hi Prosetheus. What is the exact model of HP Omen 17 do you own? The new dragon red model or the Pavillion lookalike Omen model? What is your Model number as well.

It seems like the big OEMs have been getting a ton of lock-tight thread glue because they don't want people opening their laptops.

You should be able to get a good set of steel screws on ebay real cheap.

    Something like this

    Thinking of doing a repaste.

    EDIT:
Currently able to hit a -120mV undervolt. Helps with temps quite a lot.

This is Intel 7700HQ + GTX 1070 model.
