True.
The omen control is software fault but doesn't matter for use.
But the fan noise is not acceptable for office use, and that made me return my Omen.

You can turn fans off.

Is there any word by hp of a new model with a 960/970/980m?
-
-
GTX 860M (Maxwell version) is essentially the same as the GTX960M. They use same architecture (GM107), so it won't really be an upgrade unless it's a 965M+
-
-
No differences what so ever in between 860m and 960m except 100mhz increase in clock speed. This results in 2-3 fps increase in games. Not worth to upgrade from 860m to 960m. Only make sense to
Upgrade to 965m + as these new gen GPU have 25%+ performance in terms of fps.
960m is basically a rebranded 860m only. However, with current memory of 4gb, my Omen is sufficient for some very high details on games except assassin creed unity & crysis3, where it struggles to maintain decent frame rate of 30+ -
-
While putting in a 970m will help in games, but the thermals of Omen would have to be reworked to handle the heat ( a friend of mine has got the razer blade 14 2015 edition with 970m and he constantly complains of laptop getting extremely hot even after half an hour of gaming session).
One point I want in next iteration of Omen is to remove the God damn macro keys. Haven't used it even once after purchase of laptop and it has made life troublesome as whole keyboard is shifted to the right.. -
Has any of the HP omen owners on forum tried to run crysis 3 on max settings? What are the fps that you are getting?
-
reading all these happy customers with the HP omen makes me so mad. After getting this Alienware 15 and exceeding my 15 day limit, this thing sucks. So many problems.. runs hot, loud fan wretching noises, one of the lights died (today). gg xoticPC

I am holding out for Skylake Quad, DDR4, and 965M (with DX12), using Windows 10, that should close to perfect, if only HP could somehow rework the bottom of the chassis ventatlion to make more lap friendly, and at least some kind access to change the SSD.

What issues are people experiencing with this laptop? I've heard of screen flickering, horrible battery life and high temps/loud fans. Anybody got some of these? Or others?

And really? Nothing? Guess its only the people who have probs that post more often then... -
My unit had the screen flickering issue and audio breaking occasionally, but all of that have been addressed by BIOS or patches. It may seem the laptop has a lot of problem, but you also need to remind yourself most people who has no problem with the laptop have very little reason to post in the forum. I am one of those people.sockey007 likes this. -

Copied/pasted from the Alienware 15 owner's lounge:
Is it really that great compared to The AW 15? How is the cooling on the laptop? Only thing that turns me off is people saying the audio is kinda bad and also the tacky flashing lights when the audio is playing lol
In terms of build quality and overall issues, absolutely. (I haven't had a single issue with the Omen yet, and hopefully it stays that way.) Obviously not performance wise though. The 860M was plenty for me since I do most of my gaming on my desktop.
Cooling is excellent on this thing, it stays much cooler than the 15 ever did. (In fire strike my GPU stays in the mid-upper 50s and my CPU hits the high 60s*. (*That's from memory, I'll update this post with actual numbers next time I test it. Also that would have been with max fans turned on.) While gaming the GPU stays in the low-mid 60s and CPU stays in the low-mid 70s* (automatic fan speeds, turbo boost disabled). BF4 did hit 92 on one core while the rest stayed in the 80s (High Performance mode, automatic fan speeds, sitting flat on table: no tilt/no external cooling).
Speakers do lack bass (low end) but they're not horrible. I rarely use them and I never tested the 15's speakers so I can't compare them.
The pulsating speaker lights can be disabled, so you don't have to worry about that.
Battery life: 4-5 hours on balanced mode, Wi-Fi on, etc. (I probably wasn't doing much on it.) Not sure how long it would last on a power savings mode.
To me, it's the perfect laptop for carrying to class and playing games when I'm away from my desktop. -
My GPU overheats - but that's about it.
Good battery life (3-4 hours depending on usage) - a workhorse like no other - starts up in seconds and does everything blazingly fast. Delicate keyboard albeit pushed to the right. Beautiful and sleek. Honestly, even with the dGPU overheating this laptop is pretty amazing. But on the other hand I just use it for study purposes. It's light, portable (has a responsive touch screen), looks GREAT!
I love how this computer can go from looking like a gaming beast to a sleek business computer just by turning off the LEDs. And hoping the fans don't blow up -

I also have no issues with heat in the laptop. However, i see some dust accumulated at lower portion where fans are present. Any idea if anyone on the forum has managed to clean the fans of Omen, as the laptop itself is pretty much sealed up.

Not through the keyboard, but only through bottom. Problem is the rubber lining all around the bottom which also elevates the laptop but is also attached to laptop body with an adhesive or something. I dont. think it would be usable again if i remove it once..

Hey guys! I'm a former poster here in 2012 when the envy 15 3xxx and then the 32xx (I bought a 32xx with 3720q, 7750m, 750gb hybrid drive , fhd screen). Well, it broke, but luckily I had accidental insurance. My case manager gave me this as a replacement:
HP USB External DVDRW Drive
F6V97AA#ABL
+
HP OMEN Gaming Laptop
J2W39AV_1
Windows 8.1 64
4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710HQ Processor + 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M Graphics (8GB memory)
Onboard 8GB Memory
15.6-inch diagonal Full HD WLED-backlit IPS Display (1920x1080) Touchscreen
512GB PCIe Flash Solid State Drive
Microsoft(R) Office Home and Student 2013
Security Software Trial
4-cell 58WHr Lithium-ion Battery
No Internal DVD or CD Drive
Backlit Keyboard
HP TrueVision Full HD WVA Webcam with Dual Digital Microphone
Intel 802.11ac WLAN and Bluetooth(R) [2x2], HP USB to Ethernet Adapter included
What do you guys think of it? from reading the past few pages, apparently its a pretty beastly machine but there are some issues... Are there any major ones I should look out for once I recieve my laptop? I will eventually try to OC it. Anything else y'all wanna tell me? The envy 3xxxx line had major QC control issues early on ( I was one of the first buyers) I had to get it replaced early on because of dented usb ports, faulty dvd drive, 12 dead pixels.... so atleast this seems to be better so far.
Thanks early for the help! -

As an Omen owner, i did not see any quality control issues as such in Omen. However, as you can read in earlier threads, there are some quirky issues like whistling fan, omen control does not respond properly etc. as said, these are minor quirks which you can find in other brand laptops also. Omen will definitely serve one well. It is a well rounded package.

The Omen has a unusually vent design, and rubber feet, is it comfortable enough to use directly one lap? Think around blocking of vents, the rubber piece pushing in to lap, and heat management while on lap?
-
Edit: I haven't played any games with it while on my lap so that may not be the answer you were looking for. -

Has anyone cleaned the fans of laptop without disassembling the laptop base.

Question for Omen owners:
If you press on the far right side of the Backspace key (near or basically on the edge), does it go down farther without clicking than if you were to press on the left side of the key? -
Have anyone experienced problems with the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver, version 347.88?
Almost every time I try to open the GeForce Experience program, the computer shuts down and I get the bluescreen...
Rolled back my drivers to the previous version, 347.52, and now it works fine again...Last edited: Apr 6, 2015 -
As for the right backspace key, i felt no difference in terms of key travel or feedback that i receive in any which ways i try to press the key.
On next part of latest geforce driver- yes. I have faced issue with driver not responding properly in a game (game crashes etc), which did not happen earlier. I believe the driver is not optimised properly for laptop gpu -
Hello everyone, I am looking to get a new laptop and was strongly considering the Omen 15. I know it is a bit overpriced but I don't care. I looked at reviews and it seems like people love it or hate it. I am not a hardcore gamer but I would like to get the omen because it looks awesome and is a decent gaming laptop. I would be using the laptop for college too. I was wondering if you guys would recommend it. I was also wondering if there is a solution to the fan lights being red and always on...can u turn them or off the color black? Does the fan light stand out or is it not very noticeable? Also has the screen flicker issue been fixed? I want to get this laptop but I'm afraid of some of its issues. Can someone please answer my questions and give me your opinion. Thanks
-
2) I'm in college too and so far it's been great for taking notes in class.
3) The fan lights are always on and red, but only when the fans kick into higher speeds. There's no way to turn this off or change the color, but I really don't think it's that noticeable. It won't be happening while taking notes in class since the fans won't be running at high RPMs (unless you're doing something more intensive too).
4) I have not seen any screen flicker at all in the past 2 weeks.
It's a great laptop and I highly recommend it, just watch for coupons and you can save ~$500 like I did.Last edited: Apr 6, 2015Datsyuk x 13 likes this. -
I did do a clean install of Windows 8.1 before installing that driver though. -
My fan lights are always on regardless the fanspeed, but they are really only noticeable if you are in a dark room.
I'm also in college and are using the omen in school every day. It's like any other 15" laptop in this case.
Sure, there is some known issues, but which computer model hasn't?
That being said, i would strongly recomend the omen if you could get it at a decent price.
As for the driver issue, I have not reinstalled windows on it, it runs on the preinstalled OS
Seems like its not fully optimized for the omen, or laptops in general....as the previous version works fine I'll just wait for the next update -
Looking to purchase a laptop soon and am eagerly awaiting the 960m refresh of the omen as it might come with some more changes other than the marginal gpu rebrand.
I've looked everywhere for additional info but there is none ther than nvidia stating the omen will sport the 960m.
Does anybody have any inside information to what the refresh will bring? and when?
Current owners, (in regards to the off-set keyboard caused by the programming keys), Can you game or type long research papers with comfort? -
-
As i had replied earlier in the thread - 960m is just a rebranded 860m with marginally higher clock rate (around 50mhz). So there is not much difference in terms of performance - at max 2-4 fps maybe. Even their architecture is same -GK107. So, maybe you can buy the 860m version which would now be available at good discount, given the new version is coming soon
-
I wonder if the Quad-Core Broadwell will increse battery run times on this notebook?
