Typical "Israel is evil" bull.
I'm sure you're a nice guy. But the Israel/Palestine conflict is a helluva lot more complicated than "Israeli apartheid" (as your list so gracefully puts it).
Still, as a consumer, it's your choice. I know people here in Australia who try to avoid buying American products as some political stance.
I think it's better we all just focus on the laptops and their specs.

Owners, how are the speakers? Is there any recovery media included, or just a partition?
Thank you! -

The below is worrisome to me
While HP has provided a fairly decent screen, we saw flickering on both the Windows desktop and inside games, while the technical setup of Windows and subsequent games offered the low refresh rates of 40 and 60Hz.
These low rates meant we could see flickering, drawing our attention to the flicker in games, which was still noticeable when we dropped the resolution to 1600×900, though not quite as obvious.
We’re not sure what HP is thinking with this one, but we shouldn’t be seeing flicker on a laptop of any kind, especially one where the focus is staring at the screen for hours at a time while you game.
Hopefully, your eyes won’t see what we see, but if they do and the flicker presents itself, we’d be talking to HP as this should not be here.Last edited: Dec 9, 2014 -
I'm going to keep this in mind when I receive my machine and see if I spot any flickering. I hope HP didn't choose to go with a cheap display quality for the Omen! Just hearing and reading about small negative aspects of the Omen has me anxious. -
I can confirm that I did notice flickering for a period of about 30 minutes yesterday, after a couple days of use without any perceptible flickering. For the vast majority of use I haven't seen any, and I am hopeful it was a one time thing.
-
Damn.. I don't know what to say. We are paying a strong premium given the hardware hoping for superior build quality, and the damn screen flickers?! This needs to be addressed, or it's getting returned and I'm waiting an extra month for a 960m like a rational minded consumer instead of impulse coupon buying a product that's been untested.

Not sure if the Omen will ever come with a 960m as it uses more power unless they up the battery power or put in an i7 quad capable of lower power and temps.Last edited: Dec 10, 2014 -

I notice it when I plug the power back in when it's been on battery as well as changing power settings. It's a very subtle and manageable brightness flickering, but if that's not what they're referring to, I'll be very disappointed... -

It looks like at least one retail store chain in the USA is gearing up to carry these:
HP Omen 15-5010nr 15.6" Laptop Computer - Black J9K19UA#ABA - Micro Center
With any luck, maybe available before the holiday! -
-
Still available on Amazon also. $1516 (at time of this post) for 8/256/2gb VRAM.
Amazon.com: HP OMEN 15-5010nr Gaming Notebook with Beats Audio: Computers & Accessories
EDIT: Are you sure the Microcenter has 4gb of VRAM? All I saw was "Up to 4096MB Total Available Graphics Memory." I'd guess it's the 2gb variant for that price.
EDIT 2: New review from PC World.

does anyone have any idea on possible dates hp woould include? -
It's complete bollocks. All their "reviews" appear to be things they've seen from retail store walk-ins.
Harvey Norman (one of Australia's biggest retailers) just rolled the HP Omen out in store over the last few days.
I'm not saying it's definitely BS - but I wouldn't put too much stock into it just yet. -

I like having retail stores as an option, because if you are on the fence about something, be it build quality, weight, screen, keyboard, the best way to decide if you like it is person instead of a review.Last edited: Dec 10, 2014 -
Great review. He even addressed the screen and didn't mention anything of any major issues after tests. -
-
To those who ordered and received the Omen through HP's website: Did the order status say processing right up until it arrived at your door? If not, what phases did it go through chronologically? My order status no longer has an estimated delivery date, although it said the 16th when I placed my order, which is still "processing". Thanks a bunch.

I'd rather obsessively track my package multiple times throughout the day than to be surprised. Or maybe it's better being surprised?Even then, we shouldn't be left with vague details on a product we spent nearly 2 grand on.

new review
HP Omen Review: Voodoo DNA brings grace and style to gaming laptops | PCWorld
seems like pizza was right
"If I were buying the Omen though, I'd probably opt for the build with 2GB of video card RAM, 8GB of DDR3/1600 and the 512GB SSD for $1,800, instead of this jam-packed version"
i have a dv6t that has 8g of ram and i must say that apart from being a specs i have never had a need for more than that -
Just to clarify, you should be getting another e-mail that states that your order has been updated after the initial e-mail from HP saying that your order has been received. The confirmation e-mail looks identical to the order received one except it will include your shipping and tracking number as per the e-mails I received for my Envy 15t back in July. I have yet to receive the e-mail for my Omen that includes the tracking number.

Why don't any of these reviews mention the damn fan noise.
Seriously, it's about the only thing, other than temps, that we couldn't gather from having a look at a floor stock model. -
During gaming, I would say that they are average or slightly below average noise level for a gaming computer. I would assume that you will likely either have headphones in or be using the speakers while gaming to listen to in game audio, and I find that under these conditions the fans are not particularly distracting (but you may be more sensitive to surrounding noises, so it is hard to say whether or not they will truly be a bother). If you are planning on getting a gaming computer, I don't think you will find much better in terms of fan noise under heavy use. -
Now, I know it's difficult to get a proper idea of sound while in a store... but my impressions are that it's actually really quiet. Even at full fans. I'd go so far as to say it's similar at full fans to my Clevo P157SM (780m) when just browsing the web.
Also, I saw none of the issues mentioned in that crappy review regarding the screen.
I'm looking at a Clevo P650SE tomorrow, but seeing the HP Omen today has thrown a real spanner in the works. If the Clevo is loud, then I think the Omen will be my new rig.
My only concerns are:
1) Screen seems very glossy. Would be interested to hear some owners opinions.
2) The 'Beats Audio' logo at the top left is daft.
3) The macro buttons on the left means the keyboard is awkwardly off-centre.
4) The touchpad kinda sucks. Buttons are a bit spongy.
But yeah, in all honestly, I really like this machine. Super thin AND quiet. And cool to the touch. Looks like HP is off on the right foot with this bad boy. -

Assuming you're not - I've got to tell you this thing is a bargain over in the states. The model I'm looking at comes to $2479 USD over here. It's about $200 cheaper than a Razer Blade Pro. -
So I wanted to share my experience ordering my Omen from HP with everyone here because this site has been a great source of information. I even created an account especially for this.
Dec. 1 - I ordered my laptop over the phone from HP. I got all of the hardware maxed out (4GB 860M, 16GM RAM, 512GB SSD) because I found a $200 off coupon online. I had been looking for a portable gaming laptop with top specs, but anything with a 960m or 970m was too ugly and too bulky for practical (i.e., non-gaming) use. The Omen and it's discount were a perfect fit.
Dec. 3 - I stumbled upon this forum and found the 25% off coupon (that expired on the 6th I think). I was able to connect with a supervisor from HP sales and they promised to refund the difference between the price I paid on Dec. 1 and the price I could have paid with the 25% off coupon. Awesome! I was grateful for this and it saved me over $300 USD! They said that I would receive the refund 2-3 days after my Omen shipped. Sadly, this was the end of the good times...
Dec. 10 - All along this was my estimated shipping date. I'm terribly impatient and checked the status all the time. Dec. 10 came and went with no update to my order status on hp.com. To sidetrack for a minute... HP's website is awful. It's 2014 and YOU'RE AN ELECTRONICS COMPANY! The broken links, long load times, and error screens on this site are atrocious and create a incredibly frustrating and clunky interface. This was the reason I ordered over the phone in the first place. One of the customer support folks actually told me today that they're in the process of updating the website.... Probably a good idea...
Dec. 11 - I called customer support today because I hadn't received a shipping notification. After getting disconnected multiple times, I finally was able to talk to a combination of support specialists and supervisors. I learned that my shipment had been delayed until Dec. 16. Normally this wouldn't be a huge issue, but I'm travelling for the holidays, and if I don't get the laptop by Dec. 19, I won't have it until after the new year. I'm kicking myself for not spending an extra $40 for 2-day. Given the delay, I asked if they can change my shipment to overnight or 2-day so that I get it before I leave. Somehow they are incapable of doing this. The best they could offer was redirecting my package to my destination, but I'm terrified of putting my (Omen's) fate in the hands of FedEx logistics.
At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure I'm just being a big, impatient baby about this, but I figured that I'd let people know how my experience with HP and it's customer support has gone (a mixed bag to say the least). As of today, I'm expecting to get my laptop between 22 and 24 days after placing my order, which is arguably a rather long time even for a custom-built machine. I'm also really nervous about actually receiving that refunded amount now.
I'll keep people updated just in case anyone actually cares about this, and I'll be sure to post my impressions as soon as I get my Omen. This forum has been a great resource, and many thanks to everyone who's posted information or their impressions thus far. Woo Omen Community!fxny12004, pizzasogood and pimpineasy like this. -
I also called HP support today and found out that my shipment of my Omen is delayed until the 16th.

That is unfortunate your order got delayed. I hate to say this but it is kind of something you have to expect to happen. Even with the Zbook (which is their top of the line business laptop) it takes about a month or even longer to get a customized model.
Once it does ship don't be surprised if it sits in customs for a couple of days too. Even if you had paid for the 2-day shipping many times the logistics of shipping overseas makes it take longer than you would expect.
Either way I hope (as I am sure you do) that it is worth the wait. -
-
Just wanted to update everyone on my adventure...
Dec. 12 - This morning, I received the obligatory "we're sorry" email from HP offering me a 10% coupon that lasts through then end of January 2015. That would've been super useful if I needed to order a laptop. Oh wait, I kinda already did that. Not to sound ungrateful, but that's a bush league concession. One time my Zappos order was delayed by 1 day... 1 day! I called their customer service, and they made me a VIP member (free overnight shipping on every order) for life! FOR LIFE! Customer service like that is a little millimeter of skin off a big company's back but makes the world of difference to a consumer. As pizza said, this laptop better be killer.
And if anyone wants that coupon code and feels like dealing with HP, let me know. -
-
Latest code I've found is 20% off all Notebooks or Desktops! But it's so annoying that I can't actually order one even though I would be shipping to a US address!
I'll try find some way around it... But for the mean time, if you don't know already take advantage of this!

Ordered mine from HP today. Got the quick ship model. Hope I like it.
Was also considering the Alienware 13, but there are already people complaining about the ULV processor bottle-necking games. I also wanted touchscreen, and you can only get that with the QHD display on the Alienware.
I'm guessing that's way too many pixels for the 860m in anything strenuous. -
win32asmguy Moderator Moderator
I think the 860M / 4710HQ / FHD display is definitely a good balance. It should be a solid performer for the next couple of years if not longer.
It appears that my local Micro Center has these in stock now. I am tempted to go check it out just to answer my own question about the DisplayPort and HDMI out under Linux. -
Ordered Saturday, already picked up and on the way Sunday night. Not bad, HP.
Sad to see this thread (and the internet in general) so quiet on this laptop!
Any other thoughts from current owners? -
still waiting for a credible review of this thing
how bright is thedisplay viewing angles etc
how hot and loud do the fans get
game perfromance -
Someone should send their laptop to notebookcheck or notebookreviews to have a official review! Or they should ask HP to loan their laptop.
-
Which model did you buy and did you pay for faster shipping?
I'm looking to get the quick ship model ($1599 model) but the estimated delivery date is slated as Dec 24th.
-
Yes, I upgraded to 2 business days on the quick ship model.
It was $20 after applying the latest 20% coupon (instead of the normal crazy $40 shipping upgrade price.)
