I looked through the service manual. One thing I noticed was that the 144hz FHD, and the UHD 4k display use G-sync. That kills battery life even when not using it, based on my experience with the EVGA SC15 that I got rid of. So, I'd rather have better color accuracy, but not at the expense of battery life. Maybe this 60hz panel is the best option then due to lack of G-sync, for someone that's more interested in productivity uses.

I just got one and the monitor on it is an AUO23ED, date of manufacture is week 0, year 2016.

Excellent review. I can't thank you enough. I also bought this for $999 at Microcenter. You confirmed my strong suspicion that I will not be able to enable the integrated graphics on this thing. Is there cost savings for HP to do this (no graphics mux)? Does it reduce the heat inside the case? It's a curious thing to me. I'm somewhat annoyed but maybe I shouldn't be.
Nice job covering what to expect for temperatures on the CPU/GPU as well. I'll probably take your advice and figure out how to under volt the CPU. It's been a while since I've done that and honestly I thought the i-series cores did this automatically, but I am obviously wrong.
Nice job all around, I will subscribe to your channel now. -

There is some extra component cost and firmware development time associated with offering a mux switch. In theory having the IGP disabled will save you 3-4W of TDP on the 8750H while gaming. Probably not enough to make a major difference, but it is something. If you do want better battery life the Dell G3 is another good option in this price range, although then you forgo being able to use Nvidia fast-sync which is a very nice feature as Bob explained.
The Alienware 17R4 / 15R3 non-GSync edition has the ability to switch between Optimus and dedicated GPU only, with a reboot. It offers the best of both worlds because I can get 8 hours of battery life when in Optimus mode, and utilize fast-sync while in dedicated GPU mode. I wish more manufacturers would build their machines this way! -
Which MC store did you get yours?
-
Hp website has the 1070 version when you customize it. I wonder if its max-q. It's like $1800 though with just a 1tb hdd. Feels like a ripoff compared to this model. No coupons work. I don't even know how they got this model down to $1k. Every other 8750h laptop with at least gtx 1060 is $1500+ with base storage. Skimping wirh the low grade IPS shouldn't have affected it that much.

Hi, recently got my HP Omen almost a week, and I’ve encountered a strange stuttering issue in games (mostly League of Legends) where even if my graphics are turned down and frame rate is capped at 60, the computer has micro freezes and the audio turns staticky and sounds shrill for a few seconds. It continues even after I close the game until reboot. If I exit the game, the laptop cools down, but I am still unable to perform basic tasks unless I turn it off. Once I turn it off the issue doesn’t happen for about 20 minutes. I’ve undervolted and my temperatures peak at 82 C. I tried reinstalling Nvidia drivers and the like but the issue is still pretty bad for me. I’d appreciate any help regarding this.
-
Could anyone who has the HP Omen 15 dc0051nr tell me the manufacturer and part number of the single 16GB RAM chip? I want to match it and buy a second on my own if possible.
Thanks in advance. -
Just download cpu-z and it’ll show the speed, vendor and part #Dr. AMK likes this.

Thanks, but I haven't actually made it to MC yet and trying to project what it might cost.
Does anyone have the model number? -
Hi Cletus,
I just bought the laptop, and going to replace the 1x16gb stick with a 2x8 dual channel kit. I can sell you the 16gb!
Micron Technology DDR4-2666 Part #: 16ATF2g64HZ-2G6E1
Is there a buy/sell thread on this site? If not, I can put it up on reddit/hardwareswap
Actually, which MC are you located near? I'm in NJ, and live 10 minutes away from the one here.

@B0B ,
Btw, EXCELLENT review on this!
I was already thinking of getting it, but your review affirmed my decision!
Once I get my dual channel kit in, I'm going to open her up and apply some new thermal paste as well. Even tempted to go LN like in Linus's video!!!
Side note: I use to work at the Paterson, NJ store back when they first opened - in the BYO section. Was fun times!
If interested, I can talk to the operations manager (we have a great relationship) to see about possibly providing you with laptops for review, so you don't have to worry about selling them. I'm sure they would be happy to have you review their Powerspec line as well (fyi I heard they are releasing their new lineup shortly).Dr. AMK likes this. -

Thanks and funny, I'm also in NJ. Email me at cletus_cassidy [at] yahoo.com? Appreciate it.

Would you still recommend this machine for the $1200 range?
-
I do! I update my pinned comment on many of the video reviews as new information comes in, especially relevant BIOS updates. You should check that out

I just wanted to say a couple things about this laptop. I hear a lot of people talk about temps. The fans do work and there is very good vents. The i7-8750h just gets hot so as long as throttle doesn't occur it can get in the 90° celcius range and that is normal. Just for info this has a Samsung nvme with read at 866 mbs and write at 946mbs which is pretty awesome. Says it is a Samsung pm961 nvme m.2!! Even the hard gets over a 100 read/write. Storage on this unit is impressive for the cost! Also for not having Optimus it is a non issue since you can adjust the settings in the Nvidia control panel and set to use Intel graphics when not gaming. Seriously this machine is really impressive. I just wish it had 120hz display and it would be about perfect for the cost.
-
Stay tuned later next week when I put 120hz panel inside
-
Bob, you are awesome and your reviews are excellent. I tried to do a similar effort on YouTube and recommend your videos!! I can't wait for your video!! Keep up the excellent work!!

Odd there is 1070 gtx 144hz option available in HP UK website, but not in the US or any of the retailers.
-
This is extremely new and could take months to saturate the market.
-
Hi B0B,
Thank you for your reviews! I am currently looking into getting this laptop, but I'm a bit confused. There seems to be 2 model numbers, 15-ce198wm and 15-0051nr.
Is the ce198wm model older or something? Walmart lists it as this model number. Thanks! -
Yup that’s last gens chassis
-
Thanks for the quick reply Bob! I'm guessing this newer chassis is better?
-
Thinking of doing the same!!!
I've been doing some research, only negative I can find to swapping panels is loss of brightness control. Not an issue when plugged in, but on battery I'd prefer like 60-70% to conserve battery. Heard you can download F.Lux to "dim" the screen.
Which are you swapping to? I've narrowed down to B156HAN04.2 or B156HAN04.5, not sure what the difference is though! -
I have the first one on hand so I’ll just use that.
-
I’m honestly not sure. I haven’t given HP a worthy shot till this laptop became available.
-
Ok cool I'll wait until your analysis before I pull the trigger.
-
Hey Bob,
Is that bezel using clips or double sided tape or a mixture of both ? -
Not sure I haven’t taken it apart yet. It’ll be Wednesday or Thursday before I can get to it.Quadzilla likes this.

I got this one from the UK store last week. DC0022na is the model number. I was torn between the Gigabyte Aero 15x, MSI GS65 or Razer 15... but they’re all too much money for what they are. This beats out all of them at over £500 less for the same specs (plus g sync, which none of them have). I’m slightly stunned at the quality of this thing. The 144hz panel is the exact model number used in the Gigabyte Aero 15x and to my eyes looks great. Everything BoB said about the 1060 version and heat seems to apply to the 1070 version as well, but after a BIOS update (to a lower version than BoB got) it’s improved. I really can’t fault this. It’s a steal at the price in comparison to its competitors.B0B likes this.

Hi Bob. I'm contemplating repasting due to the high idle/light load temps. My load temps are fine after the undervolt (<85c). My laptop idles in the high 40's to low 50's Celsius, however. Did you notice any improvement in normal web browsing or light loads after you repasted? I'm used to laptops being in the 30's to low 40's with light loads. Thank you.
-
Try turning on “fan always on” in the BIOS.
-
Hey Bob or somebody with this HP Omen 15-dc0051nr laptop, could you do a powercfg /batteryreport from a command line and in the HTML it creates, could you tell me the max battery capacity (design capacity, full charge capacity) it reports. Mine has never been at 70,000 mWh, and it keeps going down with every charge. It was 68,499 then 68,413 and now 67,514.
-
Mine is roughly the same. Odd isn’t it? This is a 70wh battery as per the box and my teardown. Clearly that means very little lolLast edited: Jul 3, 2018

Your last post cut off at "clearly that means." .What I found strange is that it has decreased over time. The design capacity value is decreasing along with the full charge capacity.
I chatted with HP support but they were useless. They said I could send it off for two weeks if I wanted. They wouldn't send me a new battery to try. -
Hey B0B. Please see my inbox regarding Event Viewer warnings? Should I be worried or concerned. Apparently it's a common warning on HP laptops? Please provide insight. Thank you.Vasudev likes this.

Hey fam how good is the CPU performance of this one while on battery? Does it descrease so much? Only interested on CPU perfomance as I'm not a player. If anyone can throw to the thread some Cinebench results would be great. If you don't want to post them as I know some people are shy hehehe, fell free to PM me

Hey jp how much is it I looked at the hp UK site and it says it's 1599 pounds which is almost double of what you can get it for what you can get from microcenter albeit you will get the 1070 and 144hz display I am quite excited how this model turns out, how a re thermals by the way? I am willing to get it if it's 1299 or less

Recently picked this up off ebay during the last 15% off promotion. So far liking it quite a bit. Hopefully it keeps me from caving in to the urge to spend way too much money on the new Razer Blade.
Just in case anyone is considering purchasing and adding another 16GB stick to match the one from the factory, mine came with a different model/manufacturer than previously mentioned, Hynix HMA82GS6CJR8N-VK. Same specs, so even if you mixed with the Micron you should be ok ,but if your looking to have them match exactly you may want to double check what yours came with. -
I just got it. On my current profile (better battery, default hp recommended) CPU initially kicks up to 2.4ghz then drops to ~1.53Ghz. Cinebench score of 494. If I'm plugged in I get closer to the 3930K listed as a reference (so ~1096). Keep in mind I did undervolt as well (-120mV).
This is my first good laptop in a while so I don't know how it compares to other laptops when they run off battery. I just know performance won't be as good.heraldo_jones likes this. -
Thanks buddy, just ordered the "15-dc0013ns" (i7-8750H, 1x16gb DDR4 2666mhz, GTX 1060 6GB and 144hz G-Sync display, 256gb NVME and 1tb 7200rpm HDD). I will put a 1tb Samsung 960 evo inside and make a fresh install, remove "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" as it seems to affect performance while on battery and try to optimize it as maximun as possible. I will show my experience asap. All the best.
-
Wanted to update real quick. That score I gave is when I'm power limited (not thermal limited) by repeated runs. First run score are actually a little bit higher.

Also, I'm jealous of the display you're getting. I wanted the 144hz panel but that config isn't available in stores yet in the USA outside of doing a custom order. I guess I shouldn't complain as I got an open box version of dc0051nr from Microcenter for only $899 + 8.25% tax ($974.24). May upgrade in the future. -
Those look like a really good results, IMO one of the best 8750H performers in the market. About the screen ... I'm not much a player so really got this model due to the GTX 1060 being really good when video editing and love the "no OPTIMUS" thing, so not to be dueling with lags when switching between gpus. Also I think it could be the same screen as in the Aero, so it will look marvelous.B0B likes this.

Wonder what other options are there in the UK for a 8th gen 1070 gtx laptop with both gsync and thunderbolt as well as an nvme drive at this price range
-
I want to see that also... I hope I can see thermals on it... Hope Bob follows up on upgrading the screen to 144 hz and manage to change the brightness on the laptop...

I returned mine. The battery capacity dropped 5% in 15 days. As long as I didn't use the battery, it was okay. But even if I used it just a little (down to 89% for a example) the max capacity after it recharged would drop. At that rate, the battery wouldn't even have lasted a year. It was a great laptop though.

I've read all the posts on here, I've watched your review and I also saw the video regarding a bios update push that helps cool the system down. I'm continuously pondering this laptop as for the price it can't be beat, but like many others are concerned about the heat. I never intend on playing games on battery or on my lap. I have a 24inch asus 1ms gaming monitor that I would be connecting to the laptop via hdmi. At most I would use the display on the laptop as a secondary screen. All gaming would be done on my desk with more than likely the lid closed on my Zalman NC1000 cooling pad.
Knowing the above information, would you STILL recommend this machine? Is it usable out of the box (maybe a bios update)? While I work in IT I'm not one for opening laptops and doing taredowns anymore lol. Is overheating still rampant without undervolting? Basically, if I lay $1000 will I be able to play Witcher 3 and/or Destiny 2 and/or World of Warcraft without overheating/throttling issues?
If not, for a price max of 1000 what would you recommend? I don't NEED the 6 core processor, I'd like a gtx1060 but at very least 1050 ti.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations/suggestions/constructive opinions/insults/swear words/etc lol
Btw, keep up the awesome reviews!
