I'm getting this primarily for vr and occasional gaming fun, but I also want it to be portable (battery life) with a good screen.
Does anyone know if the 1070 max Q includes an integrated Intel gfx card and thus Nvidia Optimus for battery life?
Side tangent, can the 4k screen be overclocked if it's set at 1080p? I don't like the battery life complaints of the 4k screen but want the brightness and color quality of the 4k.
With the Cyber Monday/Week sales I'm finding it hard to find a better laptop to meet my specs unless you guys have better suggestion.

Since it has a 144HZ panel then no because it has G-SYNC which the integrated Intel IGPU will be disabled. There are models that uses a 1080p panel instead of 4K, Tbh 4k panels are pointless on laptops imo. The battery life should be good without Optimus because Max-Q GPUs uses less wattage than its regular counterpart. After undervolting the CPU you'll get more battery life out of it.

Could I disable gsync to thus re-enable the integrated gpu?
I read this about battery life of the 1060 vs 1070-max q, which is scaring me away from the 1070q, thoughts?

Difference in price is pretty small between the gfx cards and 144hz vs 4k, I'm even open to a different brand, I tried the g7 and hate the screen/bezel. -
Not with any HP Laptops. Only some laptop manufacturers like Clevo, Alienware, and maybe MSI have a feature called MUX switch which allows GSYNC laptops to enable the Intel IGPU and vice versa.
Since you care about battery life then you should go with the 1060GTX with a 1080p panel. If you still want a 4k screen with the 1070 MAX-Q then you'll have to sacrifice some battery life for extra performance. Again you can always undervolt the CPU to gain some extra battery life
