I was at Best Buy last night fooling around, and came across this really awesome looking laptop. It's on sale right now for $1149 (no rebates) and comes with:

    Centrino 1.73ghz
    1gb Ram
    100 gb 4200 RPM HDD
    14" WXGA BrightView
    LightScribe DVD Burner
    Intel 2200 B/G Wireless
    Bluetooth
    12-Cell Battery
    etc etc

Does this seem like a good deal? I love the way it looks (more or less all glossy black). I currently have a DV4170US that I love, but it's just too big for me to carry back and forth to classes all day (the extra pound really makes a difference).

I looked at the Toshiba M55 and the Sony FJ270/B right next to it (all 3 had very similar specs), but the Toshiba Screen was not nearly as bright as the sony's or the HP's, and also seemed to have some real keyboard flex and other build quality issues. The sony was nice and had a fantastic screen, but was awfully big for a 14" screen (almost as wide as my current laptop).

What would you guys do? Does the 1580se seem like a good deal?

I'd look at the HP L2000 and Compaq V2000z series instead. Same layout but with a 64-bit Turion CPU and a MUCH better ATI GPU. Should be a little less money too. You might have to configure one on hp.com to get what you want.

I had an L2000 before I had the DV4170 and ended up returning it because there was a major heat problem with it, and I was getting terrible battery life. Graphics make no differrence to me because I don't game, so I'd like to stick with a Centrino if possible.

Also, the way this machine looks is really cool, but I've only found it so far at Best Buy.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

The heat on the L2000/V2000Z had to do with the harddrives. One of the V2000Z i ordered(which I returned) had a Samsung harddrive. I re-ordered the same model and the 2nd time I got a Seagate, and was much cooler... no problem with heat anymore.
