I have done this on an older HP laptop. It sucked finding all of the screws to take the case apart. It worked ok for a while but had problems again charging. I just did an ebay search for this problem and there is a company that sells just the a/c plug that you can solder on yourself for $$15ish with or shipping. They also have auctions that you can send in the little board that the a/c plug is soldered on to and they will remove the old plug, clean, solder on new a/c plug, and verify plugs operation for $40 plus shipping to them.

Here is what you need, I think.

Just make sure if you are buying one of them that you get a matching one for your power brick. The 90W and the 65W bricks use different non compatible plugs.

I just chated with HP support. They are going to fix it for free. Is this a known safety issue?

Not that I know of. There has been no recalls/repairs for this particular issue. Is the laptop still under warranty if so then they should fix it for free? The only recall pertinant to your system would be the Nvidia GPU issue which is covered by an extended warranty program. Read the sticky for more information on that program.

The DC jack on this laptop is actually on a $15 daughter board. All you need is a new little board and swap it out you dont need to replace the whole motherboard.
