    Not with a HP, but I've had a similar problem with a Compaq. Sounds like magic, but it was because of the HDD, I've replaced that and voila! :) Let me know how it turns out for you...

    Well in his case it was the graphics card / chipset as I suspected. A bit of heating to reflow solder and the machine works again.
