I own a HP Pavilion ZV5000 and it keeps shutting off by itself. I will be playing a game or online and it justs shuts off by itself. I think it might be overheating. I've read about the batteries and the chargers but I don't think that's the problem and I've contacted HP online help and they had me download BIOS and a download for my graphics card by ATI. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I've read things about this laptop on line and I haven't found anyone with this problem. I try to keep the vents open but still doesn't help. Does anyone know if I get one of those fans for laptops will that help this problem? Anyone with any help or any ideas I would greatly appreciate. Thank you.

I take it you have the Intel P4-based zv5000? (Versus the cooler-running and generally superior AMD-based zv5000z.) I'd guess that you're due to clean out the CPU heatsink fins and fan intakes. They're probably clogged with dust by now. Go get the service guide from hp.com (see the Manuals link on the left-hand side of the downloads page for your notebook) and follow the instructions for how to change the CPU just far enough to get to the heatsink. Fortunately for you it's extremely easy to do on this series, unlike HP's newer models. Have a can of compressed air ready.

If you want to do more you could buy some Arctic Clean and Arctic Silver 5 and replace the standard thermal compound HP uses, but that's probably overkill.
