OK so here is the problem and i have no idea what to do.
I have a dv2000 laptop - HP Pavilion dv2310ca Notebook PC - and as soon as i plug it in the lights come on and stay on but there is no display.
i can power it off when i press and hold the power button and then power it up by pressing the power button.
    i have tried the following:
Performed a hard reset - no change
unplugged the cmos battery and left it for 20 min.- no change
plugged it into an external monitor and nothing- no change
    please help :)

Your Dv2000 series notebook is likely inflicted with the dreaded cracked solder issue. If this is correct, it’s toast unless you’re able to reflow the solder at the motherboard (Meaning you must completely disassemble the unit). I have one of the affected units awaiting repair but have yet to do it.

If you’d like to learn more about the reflow process you can do a search here on NBR and find some excellent possibilities. You can also learn more about the Nvidia solder issue and get specific model numbers that were covered by an HP extended warranty recall by clicking here.

Good luck and all the best… Dave

    Added.

If you want to do a quick check for the Nvidia cracked solder issue, put your notebook in the freezer for about 45min. When the time is up, pull it out and quickly hook to power and boot. You may get everything back for a while or until you reboot. This includes your wireless, which is also typically lost with this issue.

I've done this several times with the broken unit I have and, as crazy as it sounds, it works and does not appear to have damaged the unit beyond what has already been created by the defect.
