i have a 1.5 year old HP PAVILION dv2500.
A couple days ago I tried turning the laptop on, and it just went to an all black screen.
I could not click/type anything (nothing worked), and I couldnt open the CD drive.
After a few minutes, the laptop shut down by itself.

also, a couple months ago, I had a similiar problem.

Clicking is obviously hard drive failure, so you were right replacing the drive. If it happens again try hard booting the laptop (removing power altogether then connecting it again), it should work. Does it have a nVidia video chip? If so, it is probably going bad. The 8400m and 8600m are known for being faulty. All of them fail at one point or another - they usually die in an year or even less.

Try to hook up with external monitor, see if there is a broken image.
If it does, you have GPU problem. Reflow the motherboard would fix it temporary. -
