I’m a bit confused by your post, so could you please answer the following:

What are the spec’s for your DV5t?

Was the original HP OS install 32 or 64bit?

Is the Vista Ultimate you installed 32 or 64 bit?

When you did the fresh install of Vista Ultimate, did you delete both the existing factory partitions? ( i.e. the HP installed Vista Home Premium & the HP Recovery Partitions )

Did you save the original HP software setup folder?

Do you have access to another internet enabled computer for software & driver downloads ?

Answer these questions clearly and, if you had no prior issues, I'm sure either myself or someone else here can get you fixed up without too much problem.

HP’s Recovery Partition is notorious for causing problems when you install or upgrade the OS. It sounds as if you’ve deleted the Recovery Partition but since I really can’t tell exactly what it is you’ve done or what remains on your hard drive, to make this easier... and assuming you have all your data backed up..... my suggestion is to:

    1. Boot into the BIOS and make sure that your DVD/CD drive is set to the first bootable device and your hard drive is second.

    2. Delete the MBR and completely wipe your drive and start over fresh. You can do this by (A) using a partition tool like Acronis, Partition Magic, or Boot it NG to completely delete the MBR, all existing partitions, and wipe the entire drive, or if none of those are available (B) use the tools available during the windows installation process. (C) You could also remove the drive, put it in an external enclosure if you have one, and delete the partitions and format the drive with another computer using disk manager.

If you’re not familiar with any of the programs and or can't do (A) or (C) above, while they’re preferred (at least by me) during a fresh install, the windows installation (Home Premium or Ultimate) will give you the option to delete or format existing partitions at the beginning of the install process. Using windows, delete everything first. Once everything is deleted, windows will ask again to create a partition for the fresh installation. At this point you will need to decide on the size. If you’re going to have two partitions just divide the indicated total available space into two and enter that number for the first partition size ... or how ever you prefer. Let windows install and don’t worry about the remaining space available. You can create the second partition with the available space using the disk manager available in windows when you’ve got the first OS up and running.

If you have no other issues, the fresh install should complete (be sure to remove the installation disk). You’re now ready to install the device drivers. You sound as though you're familiar with drivers, so I won’t go into detail. You can use the ones from your HP software setup folder you saved (good job!) or the most current ones from HP. Just be sure to install the Chipset and any AMD specific drivers first.

    3. When you get through all that…. Update windows.

This will hopefully get you to a fully functional computer. Once you get that accomplished, you can then work on the Duel BOOT setup. Anyone else that would like to help….. or sees something I overlooked…. Please feel free !!
