Yesterday while I was surfing the internet, I got a Blue Screen of Death error stating something about the file system is corrupted. The computer restarted and everything worked fine. Then, I went online again, this time the computer froze and I did a hard shutdown (power button). Now after the BIOS screen loads there is no XP screen whatsoever. I tried inserting the OS reinstall CD, that failed to read. What happened?

Hmm...I guess the basics have to be asked:
- any new software or hardware installed?
- any updates that you know of that were installed?
- virus?
- can you start up in safe mode? -

The only new hardware that was added was another gig of RAM. No viruses whatsoever. Safe mode doesn't work (I tried that last night).

Sounds like a corrupt memory module.. Only way to test is to insert a bootable memory test cd, and keep it running fr 6-7 hours. Or you could remove your newly added memory stick, and try booting again.

I think I had a similar problem when working on my HP tablet tc4200. Surfing online, then a complete crash, then hard shutdown. Then when I attempted to turn the unit back on, I got nothing. I paid a computer fixer upper guy $60 dollars to tell me that the memory slot was damaged. Since I only had one 512 MB module in the unit, He took it out and placed it in the other available slot. Since then, its been working fine. You may have the same problem.

I just tried reseating the memory and that didn't fix it...
The Blue Screen of Death I got said something about NTFS.sys (I didn't see that much of it becuase the computer reset so quickly). -

have you tried another hdd? that way you could be sure if it is a HDD problem.

I could try, I found these links on google using my desktop:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228888&sd=RMVP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195857&sd=RMVP
I think that the first page applies more to this situation although these errors say nothing about XP (just 2k) . I don't want to spend $100+ on a new HDD; then again I don't want to have to buy another $1300 laptop. This seems hopeless.... -
so you upgraded your RAM. put the old RAM back in or take out the extra RAM you installed and see. Also I advise you to install memtest on a USB drive and run the test before you remove any RAM to see if indeed there is an error.
the CD error most likely confirms faulty RAM or a media problem but run memtest and see. Run the extended test and also run the hard drive test from the bios (and other diagnostics depending on the make of your hard drive) -

Burn and boot MemTest86+ and see if it finds any errors. If it does, revert back to the HP-supplied RAM and retest.
What RAM did you buy? Crucial is the most reliable brand in AMD machines.
You could also get the HD test program provided by whoever made your HD and see what it says but I'd bet on bad/incompatible RAM. -

Also, my parents just gave me Vista Home Basic 32-bit in desperation to get my laptop to work. They said its an early birthday present. It actually runs much faster than XP Pro and is error free.
