I am trying to diagnose a friends laptop.

At first I thought perhaps the backlight went on it, but since then i've noticed a few other issues.

When I power on the laptop everything lights up and I can hear the DVD drive and HDD startup normally. But I get no HP splash screen and the monitor doesn't seem to power on either. Which I'm guessing means it's not posting, cause I even plugged it into an external monitor and it doesn't even pickup anything and goes to sleep mode.

After about 10-15 seconds it looks like the laptop reboots itself and starts up the DVD and HDD again but nothing...it just loops.

Is there something wrong with the motherboard ? I checked the monitor for a loose connection and the laptop in general for any internal loose connections and everything seemed fine.

My guess is the motherboard went and maybe the backlight at the same time...I have no idea...

Was hoping for some suggestions as to what could be wrong.

    Thanks !

Are there any beep sounds when the notebook restarts?

    Nothing, no beeps at all...

I think it might be related to the nvidia video card issue I found posted on here last night. I went to HP's site and check the model# etc etc and it was listed there. I contacted HP and it's being shipped out under the extended warranty and fixed for free :)

Hopefully that fixes the display issue !!!

Which card? Go 7200 or Go 7400? Both cards are defective and even if HP replaces the fried motherboard with another, chances are that it would again cook up in another 6-8 months.

Well the HP site acknowledges the issue with the video card itself...so when they swap out the MBO wouldn't they swap it out with a motherboard that doesn't have a video card issue/faulty video card ?

No, motherboard with affected card will be replaced with another motherboard with defective card. these cards were manufactured 2.5-3 years back and the stock remaining are the same old batch being recirculated again and again. Trust me. I am on my 3rd system board now having the infamous Go 7600.
