Hey everyone. I'm excited as I just got my notebook on Wednesday on the 30th of January. My notebook has an 256mb nVidia 8400m GS. I thought all of them now came with GDDR3 memory?? I used Everest Ultimate Edition to check the components and saw that it's only DDR2 memory, not GDDR2, but DDR2.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if there's any big differences between the 3? GDDR3, GDDR2, vs. DDR2?

I checked all over the forum with nothing. Anyone could help, that would be awesome. It does play HD-DVDs smoothly, even with AERO enabled. It also plays the DREAMSCENE smoothly with not hiccups while using programs. Just wanted to know the differences, if any!

DDR2 and GDDR2 is the same, GDDR3 is a higher and faster memory clock speed.

Meaning GDDR3 will perform better then GDDR2. The thing with HP is, some laptops are shipped with GDDR3 and some will ship with GDDR2, you can never really know which one you are going to get.

The DV2500t series ships with GDDR3 I think. I had 4 different DV6000 models and none of them came with a GDDR3 chip, so I think your out of luck in that department.

There's DDR2 memory and GDDR3, people are mistaken when they refer to the memory as GDDR2 (they mean DDR2, GDDR2 isn't used in graphics cards).

GDDR3 is a newer type of memory that runs cooler and providing better performance, and allows for better overclocking. For example on the 8400M GS ddr2 can only reach clocks of about 600/550, while gddr3 can reach upwards of 600/800.

If i'm not mistaken, GDDR2 is in reference to video cards.

All 3 are actually different. Mine is saying DDR2 not GDDR2. So I'm guessing I have the really old model. Oh well, free upgrade from the Integrated Graphics so I can't complain. I was just wondering. I was hoping to run Call of Duty Modern Warfare @ native resolution of 1280x800. It runs kinda of glitchy from time to time. I'm using the HP drivers, which were updated November '07. I doubt the new drivers form LaptopVideo2Go will make any difference, will it?

Yes it will. I played COD4 on my 128mb 8400m GS and it played beautifully. Download the 169.04 drivers from laptopvideo2go. and then download ATITOOL or NTUNE and overclock your Vid card.

Do you have any experience in overclocking, if not then don't overclock.

Updated my 256mb 8400m GS card with the Microsoft update one, which was released 2 days ago and COD Modern Warfare is screaming fast. I have it on the native resolution will medium settings and it's running smoothly. The game looks real nice! Thanks for the help guys! I was a bit skeptical at first about drivers making such a huge difference.

    Drivers make all the difference.

But remember, drivers may be good for one game, but terrible for another. So sometimes you might have to download different drivers to work well with a different game you might be playing.

Anyway all the best, I'm glad you got it working.
