This laptop comes with an AMD Phenom II P960 Quadcore and Radeon 6370 graphics. It has been upgraded to 8GB ram and a 750GB 7200 RPM drive.

How would the gaming power of this laptop compare to a desktop with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz (Conroe) cpu, a 1GB 8800GT, 4GB of RAM and a similarly sized 7200 RPM drive.

The desktop is my brothers approx 6 year old desktop that's been upgraded over the years and is ready to be retired. The HP dv7 he bought (mostly to get the buy a new PC and get a free XBox deal) is his desktop replacement for college. While he doesn't expect it to game as well as his desktop, I thought it wouldn't be too far behind - maybe even on par considering how many generations old the 8800GT is as well as the older core 2 conroe processor. I have little knowledge of where ATI or Nvidia chips stand these days, especially with all the re-badging going on. If someone could enlighten me and give me an approximate guesstimate of where this laptop will stand compared to the desktop when playing similar games.

NOTE: The games on the desktop are run at 1600x1080 and the laptop games would be run at 1600x900.

Summary first: desktop CPU is almost equal in general. It's 600Mhz faster but has two cores less. Depeding on the application/game used, either one wins.

Mobile GPU however is something between 3-4 times slower than the desktop version.

    Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Unfortunately those lists don't have all the processors or GPU's listed.

    What I did find:
    109* AMD Phenom II X4 P960 1.8GHz
    85 Intel Core 2 Duo (Desktop) E6600 2.4GHz

According to that list, 2.4GHz C2D would be faster than 600Mhz slower X4. Of course, running quad-core optimized software would make a difference in other direction. There was no benchmarks listed for the X4.

    169 AMD Radeon HD 6370M 3Dmark06: 3999
61 ATI Radeon HD 5670 3Dmark06: 11921 (this, according to the Guru3D tests, is very close to the 9800/8800 desktop variants).

As a comparison, I scored 4480 3DMarks with my 8510w laptop 2 years ago (T9300 and fx570 Quadro) and 14768 3DMarks with my desktop (e8400 and 8800GTS 512MB) 3 years ago. CPU makes some of the difference with 3Dmark06 but that's the only thing I have in common with all of these.
