My machine is HP Pavilion dv8 1080ea. I have it for 1.5 years now and it always used to be hot, and the fan used to spin faster and louder than you can enjoy, but I thought that's the way it suppose to be (never monitored temperatures). However during past couple days whenever I do something more CPU-GPU intensive, the fan remains quite passive, reaching maybe 30% at most (judging from the noise it makes). Laptop also hibernated itself couple of times, after restarting I got some message about automatic hibernation because of the heat. I downloaded couple temperature monitoring apps and both of them show: when idle: CPU at 75C, GPU at 72C; when under moderate strain (a game or 1080p movie): CPU > 90C, GPU > 80C. I assume that's not normal? Tried updating BIOS, didn't solve the problem. Does someone have any idea what might be happening and how to fix it?

P.S. when booting the cpu fan spins fast for a few seconds, I assume that indicates that the fan is physically ok.

You could try downloading speedfan or some other fan program and set the temps at which the fan spools up

I have the SpeedFan app. It only shows the temperatures, the feature to control the fan speed is not supported with my laptop.

That's one of the negative sides of a HP Laptop, my one overheats too. :(

This totally sucks. My GPU-CPU idle temperatures are ~75C and when under the load reaches frikin ~100C. Everyone else reports temps 30-40 degrees lower for this particular model. .
