Update:
I found out what the problem was BUT now I'm gettting a different error ( which is actually worse ! )
This IS a software error, connected with the soundcard !
I updated to latest drivers using windows-update ( drivers from 14.03.2007 ) and then the mute button works,
it actually turns orange when I hit it ( and as before it mutes my machine ) BUT there is a new problem associated with this:
The wireless network takes like 30-40 seconds to work after I boot into Vista ( it worked immidietly with the old soundcard drivers!!! ). Actually the whole cpu is Lagging like hell.
Guess I'm going back to the old sound-card driver (v6.0.6000.16386 ), resulting in the mute button NOT turning orange when I hit the button,
BUT at least the Wireless network works right away that way ! :-/
Just wanted you guys to know ... I think HP needs to address this problem with the soundcard drivers, alot of people are experiencing similar problems to the one I'm having connected to the soundcard drivers in Vista !
--------------
Hi guys,
Can anybody please help !!!!!
I just bought the dv9235nr machine and the mute button was working just fine, it actually turned ORANGE when I hit it, and muted the sound ...
Then I re-formatted my machine and installed Vista Ultimate and suddenly my mute button doesn't show the ORANGE light when I hit the mute button ?! I've installed ALL the drivers and tools ( quick launch / quick play 3.0 etc ... ) for the machine ... and I'm guessing this is a HARDWARE problem ?! ( although I hope it's not! ).
All the buttons work, mute DOES mute the soundcard ( and it displays the red mute icon in the system tray ) but the button itself doesn't turn ORANGE like it did before re-install ?!?!
Please help!

I don't think HP can do much about the driver issue. If anybody needs to get this fixed is the manufacturer of your sound card. Also i wouldn't trust any drivers you get from Microsoft. It'll be safer to just get them through the manufacturer.

HP are responsible since they provide the components therefore they are responsible for any issues arising from them. The reason ppl buy branded systems is for the all-in-one support.
did u update to the latest drivers on the HP site? cuz theyre the ones that could potentially fix the problem at present or in the future. Microsoft updates for this kind arent specific to any manufacturer but for the sound card/chip used regardless of what other components are used in the system as well. -
If HP decide to address it, they might issue a BIOS update. I have experienced similar problem with the Wifi, sound card and bluetooth. These three are obviously closely related and influence each other.
