I have the HP Pavilion dv9408ca running Vista. It has a 4 port firewire connection. I purchased a 4 pin to 4 pin wire and hooked up my Sony Handycam dcr=hc21 video camera and it is not detecting it.

I've removed and re-added the 1394 adapter and have the latest Vista updates. I called HP support and they have no idea.

Can anyone offer any help getting it to detect the camera?

Bad cable maybe? Usually these types of devices are plug and play so it should be a snap. Have you checked the Sony site for updated drivers?

Keep in mind I know nothing about this handycam but is it possible that firewire has to be switched? My last DV cam had to be switched between USB and Firewire in the menu.

The camera is correctly setup to output in firewire. I think it may be that my laptop has a firewire speed of 400 and the camera needs 800. Does anyone know how to verify this?
