I had a customer come into my store with a desktop processor (FM1 socket) asking if i could install it into his laptop. He said he wants to play games on this laptop and the current processor isn't cutting it. Anyway assuming we return the desktop processor and install a mobile processor will the motherboard support a bigger more power hungry heart?

The current processor is a A4-3300M, that uses an FS1 socket rated at 35w. The processor i would probably upgrade the laptop to is the A6-3400M that uses the same socket and has the same rating.

Is it possible to upgrade the processor on this laptop? Will the bios support the new processor or did hp only code bios for the supplied processor?

If you have any helpful information please let me know.

So a bit of research and i was able to find the service manual with the available processors in the parts list.

HP G4 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

The processors are listed on page 85 in the guide. All of the FS1 Socket processors should work, so i should be able to use any one of these.

    AMD A8-3500M 2.40-GHz processor (1.5-GHz FSB, 4.0-MB L2 cache, quad core, 35 W) 653350-001
    AMD A6-3400M 2.30-GHz processor (1.4-GHz FSB, 4.0-MB L2 cache, quad core, 35 W) 653349-001
    AMD A4-3300M 2.50-GHz processor (1.9-GHz FSB, 4.0-MB L2 cache, dual core, 35 W) 653348-001
    AMD E2-3000M 2.40-GHz processor (1.8-GHz FSB, 4.0-MB L2 cache, quad core, 35 W) 653351-001

I figure since they're all hp part numbers for that particular laptop and the socket, and power rating match then the bios should support any of those processors. We'll see though.

The best and fastest what you can put for him is the A8-3550MX 45W APU with Dual-Channel DDR3 1600MHz CL9 memory. It supported by latest bios and will play games quite well.

Thanks for the reply, do you know if there is a max wattage for this socket type on this particular motherboard. Will it support all FS1 processors?

Yes it does support all FS1r1 (Llano) processors, 45W versions are included too. But no support for FS1r2 (Trinity) processors!
