Does anyone know if the HP Pavilion g6-1d98dx can handle 16GB of total RAM (2x8GB)? According to the HP specs I see 8GB is the max, but my understanding is that particular AMD chipset does support 16GB.

I need to use this machine as a hyper low-cost Autodesk Revit viewer so the RAM will be utilized in certain instances. My 8GB right now crashes due to low memory availability in case you were curious.

Don't want to pull the trigger on the order though until I hear that this upgrade is even feasible.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I do not see reason, why could not handle 16GB RAM, especially if AMD chipset supports officially.

What memory are you ordered? I also want 16gb on my dv6 6cxx. I preffered CORSAIR CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 or CORSAIR CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9 DDR3, but not sure that it works on 1600mhz

I'm not so sure if that was best.if HP says it's not supported then it might not be just the processor it could be the mother board or one of the bridges that don't support 16GB. either way I wish you luck :)

Only the Llano "MX" line (for example A8-3550MX) and the new Trinity APUs support 1600 RAM. Either way, if you buy 1600 RAM now, you can keep it for your next computer considering Ivy Bridge AND Trinity now fully support 1600 RAM on all most all their CPUs. Think of it as "future-proof" RAM (if of course cost is the same or negligible).

OK, so the big experiment will take place on Tuesday (that's when the RAM finally arrives). In anticipation I have done a series of baseline benchmarks. I was astonished to see such a dramatic improvement in graphics performance just from a clean reinstall of windows 7. My 3Dmark 11 score nearly doubled itself from the bloated out of the box state.

Right now I'm running with a stock single channel 4GB module so I'm eager to see the improvement with dual channel and low latency of the 1600 DDR3 I ordered. I know these Llanos sure love high quality RAM.

Messed around with Overclocking too. Have to say I am pleasantly surprised with the capability of this sub $400 laptop.
Build quality exceeds expectations too. I even scored an SEC LCD panel... which I'm pretty sure is the new Samsung subsidiary they spun off.

No complaints here. Keeping my fingers crossed it recognizes the full 16GB!
If not then I'm trading mine in for some sweet 8GB of 1600 DDR3L.

GOOD NEWS... my g6 recognizes all 16GB of RAM!
    CPUZ reports timings of 9 9 9 23 33 @ 1333.

Here are some before and after numbers to give you a sense of the improvement:

    Windows 7 WEI
    Before:
    Processor 6.6
    Memory 5.9
    Graphics 4.5
    Gaming Graphics 6.1
    Disk 5.5

    After:
    Processor 6.7
    Memory 7.3
    Graphics 5.8
    Gaming Graphics 6.5
    Disk 7.9 (Installed a Samsung 830 SSD)

    3DMark06
    Before: 3740
    After: 5309
    42% increase!

    3DMark11
Before: P557 (P362 out of the box)
    After: P700
26% increase (93% faster than with default HP drivers & bloatware)!

Skyrim runs very smoothly now at 720p with Medium-High settings
Crysis 2 is now playable at 720p with High settings
Alan Wake went from being completely unplayable to surprisingly smooth at 720p (shocked at this one... did not think this would be possible)

So far the performance jump has been more significant than I anticipated.
For those of you out there with AMD APUs running a single stick of RAM I can't encourage you enough to move to dual channel. The GPU performance just skyrockets. Go for it!

Edit: For a sub four hundred dollar laptop I am absolutely thrilled with the performance.

I am fairly untrained with computers but know a little bit. I have a Intel Core i3-370M processor and 4GB of RAM. I was going to upgrade to the 8gb ram, but do you think this particular processor can handle 16 gb as yours did? I as well have the 64bit windows 7 ultimate.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

playablue, you may want to ask your question in another thread. I have no way of confirming the behavior of an intel-based i3 system when it comes to accepting 16GB RAM. Good luck!

Atom, thanks for the optimism. I ordered the RAM because of your certainty.
