i just received this brand new and when i press the volume up and down quicklaunch buttons .. the volume does go up and down but there is no onscreen notification of this ... if i scroll mouse over to the bell on the taskbar i do see that the volume numbers did increase or decrese...so i know the buttons are working ... even when i press the mute button.. i see the icon show that it is muted...

should this tablet have an onscreen popup notifcation when u raise and lower the volume...?

i contacted HP and they told me to do a system restore... after i tried to update my quicklaunch application and it still had no effect...

i want to make sure something is wrong with my tablet before i perform this system recovery...

    thanks

I don't think there is supposed to be onscreen notification when you use the volume quicklaunch buttons.

Your taskbar's volume did increase + decrease as you pressed the buttons, it's normal so there's no need for a system restore!

Yeah there is no on screen notification for the volume up/down buttons. Only the mute button provides for the on screen notification. However, if you want an on screen notification, then there are ways to get such notifications. For example, the Microsoft keyboard driver software provides such an on screen notification and you can use it even if you dont have any external Micrsoft keyboard connected to the laptop.

would u know where i may get that driver from ...Microsoft keyboard driver ... ? HP advised me to download quicklaunch ... i had version 6.40 D1 ... the new one they gave me was 6.40 H2... i dont know what changes that did.. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40139.exe

they also told me to download quicktouch application... ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38358.exe.... i downloaded that and then went to control panel ... additional options .. then i saw the icon quicktouch... there were three sound options.. i am not sure what that is for either... they prob just made me install these useless updates...

i received the tablet on monday .... whats the best way to determine if i have the latest and most up to date drivers.. there is a whole list of drivers and software updates on the HP site for this model...

    Yeah, right.

Yes, there IS onscreen display of the QuickTouch button controls for Volume, Treble and Bass. If yours isn't working, then something is wrong.

Go to your Control Panel, and click on QuickTouch. This will bring up the sound selection for the buttons on your display. If it doesn't come up or isn't available, then the software is probably missing or corrupted. If it is available, it still could be corrupted software. Either way you need to reinstall it.

You can get the individual QT software from the HP support site for your system. Go to this link: http://tinyurl.com/4bwrat

Input your Product # from the label underneath your system (PRODUCT not Model). The Product # will take you directly to the support page for your particular configuration and driver software. Download and reinstall the QuickTouch software.

HP said quicktouch software is when u touch the screen... the quicklaunch application is for when u use the hardware buttons ....

are u saying when u use your hardware buttons on the device u are seeing a popup notfication for the volume change?... or only when u change the volume when touching screen?... which i haven tried and not really sure how...touch bell on the taskbar...?

in control panel when i click on quicktouch.. i DO get the popup for sound selection ....

here are my drivers and software.. vista 64 bit

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2100&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3744020&lang=en

when i click on quicktouch in control panel .. i get a popup that says ..
    sound 0
    sound 1
    sound 2

and u can highlight a bubble next to which one u want...
    0 has no sound
and 1 and 2 have different sounds...

not sure what this is used for ....

You should be fine as long as you notice your volume actually going up or down, which you mentioned already anyway. You're alright.

i am on my 21 day trial of the tablet so i am trying to see if i can get all the bugs out and decide if i am keeping or not

    i paid $800 for it
2.0Mhz processor, 3gb of ram..240GB HD 5400, DVD with lightscribe.. bluetooth and N WiFi

the screen is dull and grainy but i cant find any other tablets in that price range.. most are like 1200 and above with those specs...

Different HP laptops have different quick launch button charectersitics. I own a tx2500z tablet and there is no on screen volume up/down display. This is the correct operation for this particular HP notebook. Others like the dv5t, hdx systems have the volume up/down display via the quick touch software.

tonyg24 - You can get the MS software from here...
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx
(select keyboard, mouse etc... It doesnt matter what keyboard you select, I just selected wireless keyboard 5000 and installed)

thank you.. i will give that a try .. now when u use the quick launch buttons .. u get an onscreen notification... ?

u know anything about the quicktouch... if that is even for our model tx2500z ..

and since u have the device.. u mind if i ask if u are happy with your purchase... if u were in the market right now .. would u buy the same one again or opt for a differnent one and if so which one...

thank u so much for clearing up the volume display questions.. HP was making me do a whole system restore.. what a waste that would of been...

Yeah. there is green volume up down notifcation on the lower right corner of the screen, something like this...
[IMG] This is an old image I have been using this for quite a while to get the on screen display but its the same thing you should see in the tx2500 as well.

Quicktouch is not for the tx2500z. Its only for the dv5/4/7 and the hdx models and does not work for the tx2500.

As far as the tablet itself, it has its drawbacks but the main reason I purchased it was for the wacom pen input. If it didnt have wacom I wouldnt have bought it. There are much better alternatives if you are just going to use it as a laptop rather than a tablet. I dont think there are many other devices under a $1000 which offer the functionality as the tx2500. The Gateway tablet was way too big and similar offerings from lenovo and fujitsu are still over $1200 which was out of my budget back then and still is. So, yes for the price I would buy it if I had to right now but not particularly for the laptop but for the wacom functionality.

thank u so much for that download.. i did what u stated and picked wireless 6000 and now i have the same notification on the device as u .... HP is clueless in their tech support.. i am so happy i ran into u ... i would of never figured this out .... thank u so much .... i am guessing it is not taking away allot of cpu usage on the device... simple small driver...

since u are well educated with this device is there any other perks /hacks/ registry edits u performed for better performance.. my next task will try and get rid of all the HP garbage that they sent the unit with....

what program are u using to take screen shotssssss....?

Just hit the Print screen button and open paint and paste it there.

If you have Vista, there is a Snipping tool under Accessories > Ease of Access

Go to the Software section and visit the Vista tweaks thread (its stickied)

There are a number of hacks and tweaks including undervolting the CPU for less heat and more battery life.

Go to the following sister site of this one called TabletPCreview: www.tabletpcreview.com

I've got mine nicely set up.

Use this website to adjust colors: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php

It'll take you a little time and effort but worth it. You won't eliminate the grain but only notice it on whiet to light grey backgrounds if you concentrate on it when you get it set up right.

Yep. I bought mine last summer. I was thinking of sending it back twice. But after all the tweaks and hacks, I'm loving it. I use it every single day.

    My specs:

    ZM-80 (2.1ghz)
    4GB RAM
    140GB 7200 RPM HD
    Vista Home Premium x64
    8 cell batt

    I have it undervolted to the following;

    2.1ghz @ 1.125v
    1.05ghz @ .7625v
    .5ghz @ .75v

Runs cool. Top temp while gaming is high 70's C. Average temp on batt doing normal things in balanced mode is high 30'sC- low 40'sC.

They should each be right clickable. In order: Bluetooth setup/options, ATI catalyst control center(video), Sidebar toggle/options, ?, Sound card options, pen flick options, finger print options.

The blank space is just to differentiate between the system utilities like the audio/network/power etc from the other non system icons like your Ati shortcut, fingerprint reader and any other software you might have installed.

i hear the default parameters are no good

    balanced:
    power saver
    high performance

i think the processor power manager is the one u want to change...

well i am a noob .. u tell me ...haha

Balanced or even the HP Recommended profile is fine and thats what I generally use on both battery as well as when I am plugged in. Changing the processor parameters is going to decrease your performance since it wont allow the cpu to run at its full clock speed. However your system will be quieter and cooler. So, depends on what you are looking for. The Power Saver profile provides for the same effect to changing the processor power state.

Other tweaks, just update some of the drivers and software. I would recommend a clean reinstall using a regular Vista disc but if thats not possile then get rid of some of the pre-installed software. 99% of the HP included software is pretty much junk. The only ones I kept other than of course the drivers/related software are quickplay, digital persona, cyberlink youcam, mobility center customizations and wireless manager(allows to turn off bluetooth and wifi separately. If you dont have bluetooth built in then this software is not necessary).

to my new friends just some other quick questions on the battery... i am sure there is a hack somewhere.. i have this feature on an old compaq of mine

when u scroll mouse over battery in taskbar it would tell u how much powe u have % and ALSO how much approx. time u had left to run device on current settings.. on this device.. i do not see that... just the % .. no time remaining... it also used to show me how much more time until the battery was fully charged when i was charging laptop.. these were features i had on an older hp laptop of mine... anyway to get on this one?

i also was looking in HP wireless assistant and it shows both WiFi and bluetooth on .. is there a way to just turn off bluetooth or vice versa .. just WiFi?.. to try and save more battery.. i dont see any option in there to shut off one of them.. and the hardware switch in front seems to turn them both on or off

Yeah, unfortunately new generation HP bios/batteries only report the percent available not the estimated time remaining. Not much can be done about it unless relying on thid party utilities which arent always accurate.

As far as the wireless assistant, go into the Properties menu of the program and there should be a check box to enable independent device control.

was thinking of trying this third party application ... free for basic use and i think $7.50 for pro use with added features...

    http://osirisdevelopment.com/BatteryBar/pro.html

i guess i will have to fool around with how accurate it is... i have WiFi/bluetooth off with default power save profile enabled... but i altered the screen to full brightness .. and time remaining shows under 4 hours 3:40min... i have the 8 cell battery ... shouldnt it be longer... geesh ...haha

one day i like this laptop.. the next i am like .. should i get the lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet instead for better screen and better battery life...
13 days left to decide.. LOL

check box to enable independent device control... i see says the blind man... well u did it again.... thanks for that !

Battery bar pro is a great program but it takes a few full (down to 20%) discharge cycles before it calculates more accurately.

I can push past the 4 hour mark on Balanced with the 8 cell with wifi on, bluetooth off screen brightness to 40%.

Though, I also have my system undervolted which adds anywhere from 10mins to 30mins depending on usage.
