i think the dv7 or envys are quite performant but they are pretty expensive

I'm figuring they'll just refresh the 230M to a 330M. Not much of an improvement really. It'll do quite well for casual gaming-what games will play there anyway?

The 230M can run them at medium to medium-high settings.

Do you specifically need a Pavilion? The Envy 15 has a very beefy GPU in it, if you can deal with the lack of integrated widgets (no optical drive or ExpressCard slot)

I am only interested in 17 inches or bigger, gaming on something smaller is just boring for me

ASUS G73 is good choice... it has 17 inch full HD screen , Core i7 quad and ATI 5870... fastest mobile GPU with DirectX 11... and Blue Ray and 8GB RAM ... for $1600 so its a future proof gaming machine... will beat anything Hp Has....if u got the money , i would spend it on this...but problem is that it isn't out yet.. ETA is middle feb or late feb..

Ehhh... 17" is freakin' massive. 15" is as big as I'll ever go... no point to a "laptop" if you get anything better.

Have you tried the "What Notebook SHould I Buy?" Forum?

People there might be able to help you more, but my honest suggest is getting ATI over NVIDIA, the 4650HD on some "older" Pavilions are very capable of gaming. Other than that I suggest against HP Pavilion for pure gaming. ASUS, Sager, Alienware, MSI, etc.
