So, last night an hour before i turn 19 years old -_- i was on the phone and my phone was connected to a usb port in my laptop. I got off my bed and my laptop was still connected to my phone and it fell off my nightstand and "Tapped" my knee... screen is screwed. i called Hp and they said because i didnt get there ADP warranty "accidental damage protection" it would cost me $400 to repair it!!! and my warranty i do have doesn't cover CID "Customer Induced Damage".

my roommate said he had repaired LCD screens before for mac computers and it was alot cheaper so i looked up online about what i could do.

Link was wrong.. heres the correct link

this is the screen i believe i would need ---^ the first 2. glossy or matte

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nyn1hZHeSXQ&feature=player_embedded
Video on how to do it --^

My roommate has the tools to help me fix it. am i missing anything else? would this be the smart way to do it? or should i send it into HP anyways -_- $400 is alot!

with $400 i could buy a new flat screen tv and hook it up to my laptop by hdmi.... thats what im doing as we speak but its not my tv to use. this seemed like the right forum to post on i think?

any suggestions and help is welcome!!!

I believe you are correct. Since I can see the screen is still partially working, you should only need to replace the screen itself. You could try calling HP again to add the other warranty and then call like a week later saying it broke. But that would probably cost more. If you are comfortable with the procedure, then I would go the route of putting in a new screen yourself. You may want to consider looking at other screens that are compatible because you could put in a better quality screen.

I registered here just so I could reply to this post since I can sympathize for you and I've replaced an LCD screen in laptops myself. The only thing I'd be weary of is to make sure you have the instructions on how to disassemble your laptop, but it seems you already have that covered. I made that mistake before disassembling a laptop blindly and it took me awhile to get it all back together. Another thing, just watch where you buy your LCD screen from online. That's pretty typical with internet purchases, though. If you can trust your roommate, go for it! It's definitely the most economical way in fixing your laptop. If you might have some trust issues, you could always just do it yourself or talk to the people he's done it for before, but I have a feeling that trust isn't an issue here. My suggestion would be to save your $400 and just go right on fixing your LCD screen. But we're two different people. ;p I just see a laptop having use if it's portable.

As far as tools go, you really shouldn't need much. A set of screwdrivers, and a place to store the screws while you're disassembling the laptop. Just be careful when you get to the screen itself. The screws holding LCD screens in tend to be extremely small, so you slipping is definitely a higher risk over there if you're clusty like me ;p. But yeah, as I said before.. go for it. :p You have everything but the replacement LCD itself, so.. Just be careful next time.

yeah i wish i read more before calling HP about my cracked screen.. i totally would of bought there ADP warranty and called a week later about how i broke it and it would be under warranty... would of saved me almost $250. but they already made a case and know about how i broke it without warranty so thats out of the question...

i just got off the phone with them once again about upgrading my screen to a 1920x1080p screen and they said its not possible. yet they offered it when customizing my pc.

i wish i chose the full HD screen but to late now... if anyone can comfirm its not possible to switch it myself or have HP switch it well than i guess il stick with my 1366x768 screen.

and my computer is fine. i have it hooked up by HDMI to my family's VIZIO tv atm.

You could upgrade to the 1080p screen. If you buy the connection cable from hp here you can buy a replacement 1080p screen.

edit: I just clicked the link to the screen you posted. That is a 1080p one, so you will need the 1080 connection cable.

thx for the tips on disassembling it. i have never worked on laptops myself ever before. but i have taken apart over 100+ desktop computers and worked as a tech assistant at my highschool for a year. so i feel pretty confident that i could do this with no problem i just want to make sure i have everything i need before i attempt something like this on a $1000 computer that i paid for myself...

You say you have the 1366x768 screen? I'm confused, because the one you linked that you said you are planning on buying is a 1920x1080 (FHD) screen. You would need to buy the FHD cable along with the FHD screen in order for it to work, and no one on this board has tried yet as far as I know.

I believe the FHD cable part only became able to be ordered last week or so, and no one has reported attempting it.

Well either of those screens you updated your link to should work. I would recommend the matte screen. It doesn't get as grimy looking won't glare. But that is honestly up to you. But a screen repair for $55 is hard to beat. Go for it. Even if something goes wrong, $55 to save $400 is worth a shot.

You should have never told HP exactly how the screen got damaged. you should have just told him that your screen has stopped working and they would have created a repair order for you.
It has happened to me before and thats what i did. I know my warranty doesn't cover accidental repair so it'd be stupid for me to tell them i accidently damaged it.

Lol. I was going to say this, but held my tongue. But yes, you shouldn't have said it. Now they might have a note on your file, so calling another rep would be a dead-end.

ADP doesn't kick in until something like 90 days after you buy it.

so i got my lcd screen today! I was very careful took me awhile to take the screen apart so i could switch lcd's. apparently my screen only has 2 screws to get the casing off xD

end result! it works. there is 1 dead pixel at the bottom right of the screen its not to noticeable... owell.

honestly was a bit scary working on my first laptop that i paid in full myself. also i had never replaced a screen in anything before so it was all new to me.

Hey! I'm new here and also new to all this stuff. I signed up for a forum account just so I could ask you this question. I got my hp laptop only 3 months ago and my situation is kinda similar to yours. My lcd screen is screwed, not as bad as yours, but still screwed.

The laptop pouch in my bag had a hole in it and my water bottle decided to open itself up and give my lcd screen a good drink of water. The other parts are all dry its just my lcd screen. Now when I turn it on, there are blots of the screen that are definitely water. I'm letting it dry out now.

I was thinking of replacing my lcd screen too because there seems to be some damage, there are fine lines running through it. I don't have an ADP so sending it to HP would definitely burn a hole in my pocket. I have a friend who is willing to replace the lcd screen for me but the thing is, i don't know what lcd screen to get.

How do I know which one is compatible? My laptop model is a HP Pavilion DV6t-6100 entertainment notebook pc. I was wondering how do I go about finding out which one is the right one? My screen display is similar to yours (1366x768) LED Bright View. I am so confused and afraid that i'll buy the wrong one. :(

Please do reply! :( My ruined laptop screen pretty much made me week not so spectacular :(

I'm very upset about the way hp customer care does its work in India, 3 months ago i purchased a hp pavillion dv6 and within 1 month the liquid inside the screen started leaking due to some crack on the internal glass- the outside glass is still intact , i have no clue how it happened and i am sure the laptop was never dropped.I was just watching a movie at night and the next morning i opened my laptop and the screen was screwed up, for 2 months the laptop was sitting in the service center and then finally i get a call saying that the adp was rejected because the story i had given doesn't match, obviously i can't ing write poor manufacturing of product and it has the stability of a 2 year old girl's bones. Then the people at the customer service center-Jayashekar told me to write a fake story that i was in a bike accident with my friends, i asked every one at the service center and they were like sure it will work- great people we indians are. So anyway i get a call 1 week later saying my ADP was rejected because apparently it was an act of mishandling and intentional damage- thank you very much for wasting 1400$ + 250$ for fixing this piece of , How i wish i had listened to my dad and went for dell, my dell pc hasn't given me the slightest bit of problem for the past 4 years,
