Hi,
I recently joined the forum as I am in desperate need of help. I will try to make my problem as short as possible.
My laptop is an HP Pavillion dv2081ea and recently my WinXP OS got corrupted and so I went to install a fresh copy of XP using my recovery discs. I inserted the DVDs and started the setup and started the recovery. It then gave me an error saying that it couldn't copy "Base.inp" I clicked retry and it progressed but again the same error popped up. I kept retrying but to no avail, it kept popping up. I figured that my recovery DVD was corrupted so I gave HP a call and they sent me the original recovery DVDs. I started the setup and again I faced that dreaded error. I gave HP an email and they said that I should try and get a retail copy of XP. I borrowed one from my friend and put it in. It booted up and I started the setup. It began the copying of files to the HDD after formatting and it gave me the one error for PCs that is equivalent to the bubonic plague, the horrible BSOD. The error was of two types: (1)IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or (2)PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I gave HP a call and they said it could be either because of RAM or HDD. I decided to first change the HDD. I gave HP an email stating I wanted to do so and they replied, guiding me through the process. I took out the HDD to see what it was and I put it back in and rebooted. I ran the BIOS and went to HDD Diagnostic to check if I had fastened the HDD securely. I saw that it said the HDD was not detected. I took out the HDD again and this time I made sure everything was exactly how it was before. I ran the BIOS and still the same. Now I am a bit worried that I might have done something to the motherboard. I really need help fast.
PS I also tried installing Vista but the same BSODs came up (for vista it was immeadiately when the setup came up)
Thank you for your help

Those Stop (BSOD) errors may very well indicate hard drive failure. In fact, this happened to me about a few weeks ago. Windows XP started going awry (gradually slowing performance to a crawl), then a reinstall failed midway, and the BIOS stopped recognizing the drive. Turned out the drive really was screwed and I tossed it (not before cracking it open and scratching the crap out of the platters in revenge =D).
Did you actually change the HDD or did you just pull it out and put it back in? Try a different HDD if you haven't, and maybe your problems will be solved. -
Thanks for the advice. I will see if I can buy a new HDD today and see what happens. Well my XP became virus infested and so thats why I had to do a fresh install and this is when my HDD started failing on me. Could that be the cause of failure?
