My buddies dv4 crashed and wouldn't read the hdd. He bought a new one and installed it and the laptop still wont recognize a hdd. He called me I went over and checked it. The hdd was installed correctly but the laptop wont recognize it. I took windows dvd over and the windows installation wouldnt recognize the hdd either. I can feel the hdd spinning but the machine is not recognizing it. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you format the drive from the bios first?

How do you format a new HDD/SSD from BIOS? -
My understanding of protectsmart is it is essentially a motion detector for the drive disk. Any sudden jolt or movement freezes the hard disk . Please correct me if I am wrong.
I believe there is an option to format disk in bios or recovery. Again correct me if I am wrong. I have had to format all new disks prior to new os Installation. -
Actually, this is good to know. I figure at some point, I will be looking into upgrading to a better SSD myself and I really do not want to go through the headache of trying to figure out why whatever drive I place in my dv6, isn't responding. So it sounds as if users basically need to use the tools for formatting that drive that HP provides (whether it be BIOS or recovery center related) rather than the utility included on a standard Windows OS share. Is that right?
Thanks, shasta7! -
I tried to format in the bios but I couldn't located the function. I dont believe that the bios is even recognizing the hdd.
