HP Pavillion on off switch

Hi, New member first post; My partner has a HP Pavillion DV 6000 Laptop which she suspects has been Knocked or maybe dropped accidently. The problem is that it now takes a while to get it switched on, usually by repeatingly pressing the switch while pressing down at various parts of the cover. I havn`t had a chance to look at it yet, but is it an easy job to remove the top cover etc to check switch contacts etc. I`m told the top cover is a bit loose near the switch so it may only need tightening down. Any help would be great thanks, John

 

you can see videos on how to take it apart by typing hp media services library into google, and then selecting the first one, and go through the thing, and click FRU Repair/Replace and it will give you a list of things that are removable.

Today I took off the power/speaker panel but couldn`t see anything wrong or loose. The laptop still wont switch on using the button but by gently running a finger along the panel over the 4 blue leds ( volume up/down etc )the unit will spring into life. I forgot to mention earlier that the speakers do not work either but will do using headphones. Am I correct to suspect a faulty power button switch and if so where I could obtain one ( I live in England ) and the likely cost. Thanks in advance, John

 

i think that there is a little power switch board and that it may be faulty. so it may just have to be sent in. unless you can find a new board you may just have to use the quickplay button to turn it on easily. Hope it didn't void the warranty

 

Hi, thanks again Caveman, I dont use a laptop myself. Could you tell me more about this quickplay button. Also, when the laptop does start it opens with a Quickstart media player by default then when clicking the Windows Logo it will often go into hibernation and shutdown (not always though ). Whats the best way to get it to open straight away with Windows ( step by step please as I`m not too hot with PC`s. Thanks

I am glad I found this thread. I am having the exact same problem. Quickplay is the only way to turn on the laptop. I then click the windows icon to go into hibernate, then it comes on as normal. However, sometimes this works the first time, other times it takes a dozen times. It is very annoying and I need it fixed. The speakers went away first, but I though it was no big deal and bought external ones. Now, the on/off switch will not function or light at all. Must be a typical problem. Hmmm. Can this panel be replaced? Thanks.

I have an HP Pavillion 6000 and I have the same issue. The powerswitch does not work.
The quickplay button turns it on to use the dvd or cd, but as you have found out it goes to hibernate when you click on the Windows icon.
The help tells you that if you are in Windows and click quickplay it takes you to quickplay and only then will you get to go back to Windows by clicking the Windows icon.
In other words, you can't get into Windows using Quickplay directly.

It was working when I pressed it many times but over time it doesn't work at all.
I took the panel off (3 screws in the battery compartment and you can slip the top part off).
The power switch is located on a small circuit board. Most likely you'll have to replace that. I've had my laptop just over a year and didn't get the warranty. Guess I'll have to find out where I can get a new switch. The 3 wire sets that connect to the board come off easy.

It sounds like this is becoming a common problem. I think everyone should email or contact HP so they know this is a piece of junk. I'm really disappointed with this laptop.

 

To get it fixed for free I would say that it is just not turning on and that you saw this:

In this document you see The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.
The notebook does not start. in that doc, and hope that they will fix it for free, which they should. Though technically this is for a motherboard issue but give it a try. Tell us how it goes.

I did find the part number: 431437-001 power button board. There are several places that sell this over the internet. The price for a new one is $75.

It is an easy process to replace the board, but if I can get it done for free, might as well try. If not, I can buy the board and do it myself. It would probably be faster, actually.

when you use the blue touch buttons on the laptop, it tells it to start quickplay media center when you start windows
