I have a HP Pavilion zv5000 (out of warranty). The cooling fans (2) spins upon booting. One of the fans completely stops after booting and windows icons are displayed. The other fan stays on, cooling the system. Does anyone know if the fan is turned on/off with an built in heat sensor? Are both fans supposed to be turned on at the same time? If so, any suggestions or fix? Anyone else with this problem?

That's standard behavior. The second fan will spin up if the CPU gets hot enough. On my zv5000z, nearly all the time it's only the first fan running and in slow/quiet mode. (Not even that, actually, since I swapped in a Mobile-class Athlon 64 to replace HP's DTR-class CPU. The fans stop entirely until the CPU heats up to 55C, then the one fan kicks in until the temp drops to 50C. Athlon XP-M's have the same behavior. DTR-class Athlon 64's run the one fan all the time whether it's needed or not.)

Brianstretch, thank you for your reply...I went to my local BestBuy store. I was able to check the fans on a HP Pavillion zv5000 that they had on display. Like you said, one fan was cooling the notebook.
