I just tried to use the 21 day price protection on my HP order and was told "we can only credit a max of $50 now"

is this true or did i just get conned by the service rep?

    seems pretty weak either way

I think you're right, the customer rep was not giving you the right information. If they post something on their website, that's what they have to honor, and as of TODAY, their website still says that “Should we lower the price of the product you purchased, you may call 1 (888) 999-4747 within 21 days of delivery date to request a credit for the difference between the price you paid and the current the HP Home & Home Office Store selling price. This excludes mail-in rebates, which are not part of this price protection

Also, another thing you can do, if you're still within your trial period, is threaten to return the laptop, and they will eventually offer to give you some discount. I did this, and was not successful with the first rep I spoke with, but insisted on speaking with a supervisor, who offered me $150 to keep the laptop.

I've also have had much more luck with the American HP sales reps, than the reps overseas. If you want a better shot at getting an American rep, when you do call, try to time it near the end of the work day (4:30-4:40ish); that's when you'll still likely to get the American HP sales reps instead of the overseas ones -- and at that time of the day they're itching to go home so they'll likely cave in to your demands. Also ask for the supervisor right off the bat, they're the ones who can actually do anything. ;)

Nope, you got yourself a bad sales rep... I got $133.40 back (straight price difference; I didn't want to confuse the rep with adding on the sales tax difference). Showed up as a credit on my credit card the day after I called.

    Good luck!
