Hi,
I don't know if anyone here pulled this off yet but i managed to get it working.
When the pc is off and i press my quickplay button the pc starts quickplay direct (just like it does with xp installed) and when i start the pc with the regular power button it boots vista. If anyone is interested let me know.
(The idea is simple but in order to make it work you need to do a few mods. Maybe anyone can simplify it later.)
-
Yeah, I'd be interested in knowing how you pulled it off. That is one thing I liked about my old HP and was disappointed in when I got this one. How complex is it to make work?
-
I would love to know how you make it work!
-
I've been working with different ways to do this. At first i rewrote a part of the Master Boot Record but now i managed to make it relatively simple.
Excuse me for any spelling mistakes or expressions. I don't use English every day.

I used a HP Pavilion DV6300 (Intel) series, bios version F29 with a clean install of Windows Vista Home Premium. Now this will probably work with other HP notebooks but i've only been able to test it with mine.
First of all DO NOT TRY THIS without making a backup of your data / documents chances are you'll ruin your windows installation and you'll have to start from scratch. I will not be responsible for any problems, data loss or anything so trying this is at your own risk!
Step 1. Do a clean install of Windows Vista. (This may not be necessary but it is recommended)
Step 2. You will need to disable the User Account Control temporarily. There are several ways to do this, i recommend the msconfig way from this website:
After doing this you MUST restart.
Step 3. Now we'll need to make a +-1GB partition to install HP Quickplay Direct. We'll use the 'Diskpart' utility in Vista.
- Open your start menu and type: diskpart , press enter.
Now this is the dangerous part this step is different on every computer since you can have multiple harddrives or partitions.
- First check if you have the correct drive number and partition number, do this by typing: 'list drive' for the harddrives and 'list partition' for the partitions
- Once you know the correct numbers, the numbers at the end need to be the onces of the Windows Vista partition (in my case the drive is 0 and the partition is 1), type this and press enter after each command:
select drive 0
select partition 1
shrink desired=1100
exit
Step 4. Now we need to partition the space we created.
- Open your start menu and type: compmgmt.msc
- Click 'Disk Management'
- You will now see +-1GB of free space. Right click on it and choose something like 'New partition' (i have a Belgian version of windows so i don't now the exact English description.)
- You will need to specify this in the wizard, leave the other options as they are: Driveletter X: (VERY IMPORTANT), DO NOT FORMAT IT
- Continue until the wizard is finished and you should have a 1GB ntfs partition with driveletter X:
- Close Computer Management.
Step 5. All that is left is to install HP Quickplay Direct 2.3. You can download it here or somewhere else on the web (maybe you already have it):
http://www.asifism.com/hp-quickplay-windows-vista/
- Now place the HPQPDP directory on your system drive (the drive with vista on it)
- Go into the directory and launch the setup, continue untill finished and reboot the pc.
_________________________________________________________________
THAT'S IT YOU'RE DONE!
(Now you can remove the HPQPDP directory and re-enable User Account Control)
Sorry, I just read it on the net someone has done this before me. Anyway have fun with it! -
Wow, That seems pretty easy. Thanks for passing this along.
I don't understand why HP has not done this on their Vista machines. This seems so simple.
Has anyone else followed these steps and gotton this to work? -
I'm not sure this is even legal.
Do you know of another source?
But nice try. Maybe someone could pass these instrcutions on to HP. -
Sorry, i don't know anywhere else to get it from.

here: http://asifism.badongo.com/
Id like to see some success with others before i try this out Im still a little sceptical -
Note If you currently have QP3 on your computer. You should uninstall it 1st.
Ok, I went though everything up to the time it comes to the install.
Per the instuctions. After extracting QP 2.3 from the RAR file. It says to install it from the system drive. The Drive with vista on it. I did.
But instead of installing it on Drive X. It installed it in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\QuickPlay\ directory.
There was no option in the setup program to install it on drive X.
So, The questions I have now is. How do I really know if the program I downloaded is really QUickplay direct or plane old Quickplay?
Wha do I do next?
By the way. From what I can tell it runs from Vista just fine. But does not have all the features QP 3.6 has.
When the computer is off, I can also start it up by pressing the "Q" key Just like I was able to with Quickplay 3.6 which came with the computer.
But it still goes to VISTA first before it starts up QP 2.3. Which once again makes me think. The program I downloaded was not Quickplay Direct version. -
how does one even install QP on XP?
-
Doesn't work.
Well that was a good lesson. At least I learned how to make a new partition without destroying my computer. Diskpart is a pretty neet tool. Saves you from having to go out and buy partition magic which I already have. Hee Hee
And to get the space back. All I had to do is go back to diskmanagment
right click on the X partition that was created and select delete.
Then select and right click on the C partition then select expand.
I think this was just as fast as using partition magic. -

Ok, I'll give it another try at lunch time.
What are the Data 2 and 3 cab files for? -
They are part of the installer, but you will only need the hpqpdp.rar (690mb).
-
Well sad News for Vista Ultimate 64 users.
Does not work and you will have to restore your PC. if you follow the above listed procedure. I guess now we know why HP has not put QPD on these vista 64 boxes.
Everthing worked in the procedure until after we installed the QPD to the X drive.
Once it rebooted. It went into the Factory restore automaticly
Lucky me I had created a Ghost (mirror) image of my PC's drives before I did this procedure. So only took about an hour to restore everything back without having to do a F11 factory restore.
But good lesson. -
Maybe because you still have a recovery partition? I only have my vista partition and the quickplay partition. I think it that the reason for it working with me is that i used a standard oem vista dvd and none of the hp dvd's.
-
Instead of looking for X it see's "E" instead. But X is second in line in the middle of C and E "C X E" I don't know.
But that's enough of a try for me. Really wouldn't be much use to me anyway. Except when I bring the computer out to the workroom. It would save on battery life.
After seeing the Windows QP 2.3 version. I kind of like all the new features
in 3.6.5001.
Thanks.
Maybe somone else will have better luck. -
Why don't U try to download it by torrent:

I installed QP Direct Play yesterday from http://asifism.badongo.com/ and it is working fine. You just have to create that X partition 1028mb at the end of the drive.
-
=)
I tried this before, and had to restore my laptop. Not sure what I did wrong.
Possible the HP partition.
Does it also work on Windows XP? I have downgraded.
I have two HDDs and three partitions.
On Disk 1 there is C:\ (Windows) and G:\ (Data)
Disk 2 is one partition of data (D:\)
Where would I put the Quick Play partition?
Thanks!

...
Also, Will HDMI still function properly? -
Can annyone please direct me to a download of the Quick Play Direct version?
