I am having the HP Recovery Manager "No CD/DVD drive located on the system" error. When I try to make a recovery disc from the program, it gives me that error on startup, and then quits itself. I tried rebooting -- nothing.

I know there's been other solutions on this board, posted about how to backup the recovery partition in other ways, with other non-HP programs, but I want to do it with the HP Recovery Manager itself, just to be safe.

I am considering doing a clean Vista install on a new partition, so I want to make a Recovery Disc JUST IN CASE. I know, doing a Vista Clean install, I probably don't even NEED a "recovery" disc (it defeats the purpose) but, I don't want to take any chances.

Any way to fix this "no CD/DVD drive found on system" problem? I'm waiting to fix this problem before I do my Vista Clean install.

    Thanks.

The problem I ran into doing a clean install of Vista is you don't get all the programs. Things like the Fingerprint reader software etc. I know its prob out there somewhere, I just can't find it.

Check all your drivers, make sure something appears for the drive in the Device Manager.

If you save SWSetup, you have all the drivers/programs that came with the laptop. If you didn't, you can get everything at www.hp.com/support.

Same thing happened to me. I just decided to risk it and not make any recovery discs. Turned out fine, but you might not want to do that. Also you have backup SWSETUP to get the programs like QuickPlay and Verisoft.

And SAHM1, the recovery discs that they send you will probably have bloatware on them.

Yeah, but so do the ones that you burn.

The cheapest DVD drive is really a CD burner that can read DVDs. If you insert a DVD, it's going to say no media and wait for you to put in CDs.

The big thing is burning off the SWSETUP folder, use Nero to do it, or copy it to another computer if you have them networked.

I've got the SWSETUP folder in my web space. Click the link in my sig and scroll to the bottom of the guide.

The only thing that doesn't have the bloatware is a retail copy of Vista. Then you would have to download all the drivers / software you need.

The Anytime Upgrade disc used to come with all HPs which allowed a clean install, but now you have to buy one from CompUSA or Microsoft.com for about 7 bucks.

and would that allow a clean install of my system w/o any problems or having to download all the drivers?

No, I just did a clean install and then added the programs I wanted. I installed about ten HP programs and drivers. It's the best way.
