From reading their return policy, it looks like I can return my dv5t up to 21 days after receipt.
Does it matter if I have used it heavily, personalized it the look and feel, uninstalled apps, etc?

I asked an HP sales rep just a couple weeks ago what their return policy is. It is 21 days, and there is no restocking fee.
However, what do you mean by "personalization"? I'm assuming the desktop, because I think if you used stickers and the like you wouldn't be able to return it.But if you're just uninstalling apps, just do a factory restore, that should be ok. I would do that anyway.

You can do anything software wise, just do a factory restore before returing.

I wanted a higher res screen...no questions asked. Just do a factory restore before shipping it back
-
is it the same for resellers?
-
yup doesnt matter if you change the software, they will just re-image the hard drive.
just dont do anything to it cosmetically. -

If you just do a factory restore before an item return, that doesn't necessarily remove all your sensitive data, e.g. banking, etc. You don't know what inquisitive, computer-savy end user will receive your hard drive next!
I recommend performing a hard drive wipe before a factory restoration using DBAN (free). That's what I did before returning my HP.

I returned my custom-ordered dv7t roughly six weeks ago. I used it for four days and hated the fan noise and the amount of heat it generated during casual use.
The HP policy allows for 21-days from the shipping date (some say from date of receipt). There can be no physical "damage" which includes scratches, broken or cracked trim, any other visible defects not present when you unboxed it!
Software or O/S customization, added or deleted programs, etc. are irrelevant. They don't care if you delete your data or programs or not, but I strongly suggest re-imaging the hard drive to factory settings using the System Recovery function.
All accessories, manuals and documentation shipped with the system must be included in the return or they have the right to deduct the cost of anything missing from your refund.
It took less than ten minutes speaking with a very professional customer service rep and the Return Authorization (RA) was issued! She offered once to send an identical model as a replacement, but I declined and she was fine with that.
After the call, the rep email the RA to you. The email also includes a link to generate the return FedEx Shipping Label and HP pays for the return shipping. Once the RA is issued, it is only valid for five calendar days. If you exceed the five days, a new RA has to be generated (if still within the 21-day return window).
I dropped off the package at FedEx on a Wednesday afternoon and the following Tuesday morning, I had a full credit on my credit card! Too bad that the laptop didn't work out, but HP deserves credit for their relatively pain-free returns process.
HP Return Policy - no questions asked?
