Ive been interested in buying an alternative tablet type device to that of the iPad and HP announced the Slate which seemed promising.
This is their official page: https://h30406.www3.hp.com/campaigns/2010/promo/HPSL/index.php?jumpid=ex_r602_go/slate

The project looks to have advanced quite far with the Slate being shown on CES by Steve Ballmer and all those YouTube videos of it.

But there are some speculations that the whole project is being cancelled: Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows 7 Tablet Project
But nothing is confirmed, only anonymous sources are reporting this.

So my question is, does anyone know whether HP is still continuing with this project or have they cancelled it. For me it would seem strange that they are still keeping the website but not going on with the project...

Hmm these are only rumors so there still is a chance but i doubt...
WebOS i think will be more of a direct competition to the iPad making the device less versatile than if it would be running Windows 7.

They say it should be released by Q3 this year. Interesting but IMHO the closer HP tries to compete with the iPad the less sucessful it can because iPad is a very good device but not very 'open' if you know what I mean.

The problem with windows 7 is that it isn't optimized for good battery life. You shoudl also bear in mind that the homebrew community has opened WebOS right up and Palm has made no motions to try to stop their shenanigans. You might also want to look at the ExoPC tablet - it runs a custom touch layer on top of Windows 7 and you can easily switch between the two....still battery life isn't terribly awesome.

Especially when they made such a great tablet like the tm2, why bother with the Slate? How much are these expected to cost anyway? Can't imagine it selling entirely well if it's more than US$500.

HP should hire some designers. I don't particularly like the corners. The iPad has tapered edges. The ULV processors should help with the battery life but HP should use a more up to date battery technology.
