any idea when the new quad core version based on the 8th gen intel mobile chip is likely to be released? The competitors products from Dell and Lenovo have already been announced. Thanks.

I got the 15 inch model(8th gen intel) and I need to replace the ssd. I wanna know if the rubber feet are gonna be damaged when I open the bottom cover. If so, where can I get them?

Could you elaborate a bit more on your fresh windows install scheme? I just received a HP Spectre X360 13-AC003TU and had to do a factory reset due to a dodgy windows update (black screen after logon). Ever since its been a bit slow and windows update is now taking longer than ever. So I'm inclined to do a fresh install with minimal HP stuff. So far I have boiled it down to 2 methods:

    Method 1:
    - Create windows 10 installation USB using Media Creation Tool
    - Disable UEFI?
    - Run setup
    - Delete all partitions
    - Install Windows
    - Install HP drivers

    Method 2:
    - Use the Windows Refresh Tool
    - Install HP drivers

Hi everyone. Been looking into new laptops, and the spectre x360 is on my radar among others.

First question, does anyone have the new 8th gen with mx150 15 inch model? If so, how is it on gaming and heat?

Next, is the thunderbolt 3 a proper TB3 port and not like on the xps line where it's not fully 4 lanes?

Also anyone try an external graphics dock with it.

    Method 1
I did a complete fresh install with Media Creation Tool.
    Did not disable UEFI.
Deleted all partitions, inclusive recovery. (Made a backup to USB first)
Installed Windows and Realtek sound drivers, all Intel drivers and Synaptics touchpad driver.
Did not install any of the HP labeled drivers (e.g HP Wireless Button, not necessary, works anyway) and additional programs.

    Everything is working well.

    Hey guys,

Friend of mine just returned his Spectre because of the screen being broken (parts not lid anymore)
He's thinking about buying the same unit again, but I see a lot of negative things about this laptop in this thread. Would you guys recommend buying the HP Spectre x360 13-ac017nb?

Thanks in advance for the feedback

the new version has been announced and will be available at the end of the month. enhancements include - 8th gen 4 core processor, micro SD slot, better cooling and rear vent, finger print reader, privacy mode. i am glad i returned it. it’s a very nice laptop but the quad core is better for the apps i want to run.

Scooped up a 13" i7-8550U model yesterday, so far it's great. Gets a little toasty at the rear where the exhaust is, not a problem in laptop mode but could be a bit much when holding it in tablet mode.

    Google says:

"In general, if a system has a single Thunderbolt 3 port, the connectivity behind that port could be as high as four lanes of PCI Express Gen 3 with dual DisplayPort links. It could also be as little as two lanes of PCI Express Gen 3, with a single DisplayPort link."

would like to know the answer to the #lanes question as well.

I have the 2K (2560x1440) display on my x360 and its gorgeous, I imagine the 4K would be as well, but the battery life is so impacted that if I could do it again, I might go for the FHD display. How much battery life are the 4K owners getting??

Also, wanted to know how many of you use a VM (vt-x enabled, Win10 Pro) ? any issues?

You could try the hwinfo64 hardware inventory and see if it shows how many lanes are used for that interface:
    https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

You might try a beta version, for such new hardware.

There are a number of windows when hwinfo64 starts up, you can close the smaller condensed view and click around the large dialog.

You can click on Temp's to see the monitoring dialog with all the monitoring for temps and other data.

The initial start up dialog, the tiny one, lets you pick individual dialog options before starting all of them.

Sensors only is the monitoring dialog, the other is the condensed inventory, while not checking any gives you the large inventory dialog + condensed view.

Barring specific and accurate info from HP directly, you'll need to dig in to figure it out for yourself :)

I have the 15 inch 4k. I'm fairly confident the 15in has EDIT: 2 lanes ... I think I was wrong unfortunately, judging from the CUDA scores

Another quick question. Did you happen to get a new stylus with your device? I saw a mention of HP releasing a new active pen with better pressure sensitivity and charges throu us c and eraser in the back.

Also thanks for the info troybot!

As a buyer of the late 2016 version of Spectre x360 (w023dx),
it's really a fly in a ointment that this model does NOT support the active stylus.

I wonder that the screen ID of the early 2017 version, ap023dx (FHD type supporting Active stylus)
Could anybody with the ap023dx help me confirm the screen ID of it?
If yours spectre x360 screen is the 4k type, thanks but I need the information of FHD type.
(By the way, the screen ID of the w023dx model is CMN1367 made by CHIMEI)
Thinking about changing the screen by myself.

    Thanks

I'm considering getting the Spectre 360 13, HP it supposed to have them on sale for BF but so is best buy.. The specs are good the prices are good BUT I am still wary of the HP brand. Reading throught this threas isn't making me anymore comfortable. So to the OWNERS of there HP products would you buy this notebook again? Do you recommend it? If so should I but it from HP or Best Buy? in case I have issues and need support...Does HP support work any better than years ago? Surface Pro are goin onsale and so is the Yoga and XPS 13 so I thought I was decided on the spectre but HP.....what do you think?
    HP - Spectre x360 2-in-1 13.3" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB Solid State Drive - HP finish in natural silver, it has the I7-8550.

I bought the previous version of the x360 @ Best Buy. It's very nice. I returned it because Intel announced the 8th gen mobile processor and I knew it would be updated. Best Buy was great to deal with. Now I am ready to buy the 8th gen version. I expect that HP or Best Buy would be fine. I have no idea of the quality of HP support. The other option is the Dell XPS which also looks very nice. I expect either one would be fine, depends on whether or not you want the 360 hinge.

Recently got the 8th Gen Spectre x360 13 inch and couldn't be happier. I got a custom build model with the Privacy screen. The privacy screen is interesting, turns white instead of black when at an angle. Seems pretty effective but I'm not personally a fan because of the way it affects the screen when its on. Seems to hurt my eyes when I use it, but it might just be something my eyes needs to get used to not sure at this point.

I'm also probably one of the few people that is connecting this thing to an eGPU. Spectre x360 + Razer Core + Witcher 3 = Awesome.

Hi everyone - I'm interested in the "HP Envy x360 Convertible" but it's not clear to me if the latest on HPs site, which is just called the "15t" is the same as this model from Best Buy which actually caught my eye with manufacturer model number "15M-BP111DX"

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-env...-drive-natural-silver/6081901.p?skuId=6081901

Anyone know anything about these or have one? I'm mainly curious if I'll be able to add a PCIe NVMe drive to it.

    Thanks!

    I picked up this https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-spe...ish-in-natural-silver/6080202.p?skuId=6080202

because it has all the functionality I need. I already have an Alienware 17 inch notebook for gaming so I don't need a beast of a video card in it. Bestbuy was AMAZING, the sales personnel had this model on display but the one that went on Sale BF was SLIGHTLY different as it was the 12DX not the 14DX, there sales guys failed to notice the difference and honestly so did I. The Privacy filter is something I REALLY wanted so when I got the first unit and hit F1 to activate the screen and it popped up with Windows Help screen I was............upset. I went back to best buy and after having a discussion with the Manager and the sales personnel, they agreed to exchange at no cost to me for the correct unit. I was stunned at there great customer service.

As for the laptop so far it is Amazing, battery life is approaching 2 working days without being plugged in, Not gaming or constant rendering but general office work the battery is strong. They should have differentiated these new spectres with the older ones because it seems they were indeed listening and have corrected a bunch of the issues with older models. My old Dell 5470 I was using for work is a Tank compared to this it is so light, it will make travelling much easier. I picked up the Worry free Accidental damage warranty from HP not the Geek Squad warranty as there so overpriced, HP had them on sale for $191 3 years and if I don't use it (supposedly) you get your money back. I will review it when I have some more hands on experience.

Congratulations on the new laptop :)

So what was the final price?

At list price of $1449, it's almost 2x the cost of the faster Ryzen 5 + Vega GPU, $749:

    HP - Envy x360 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - HP Finish In Dark Ash Silver
    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-env...sh-in-dark-ash-silver/6124570.p?skuId=6124570

    And it's got a 2" larger screen :)

Still really curious if anyone knows about this mysterious "15M-BP111DX" HP model from best buy.

I helped my dad pick it out and I should be able to look into it more soon, but in the meantime I'm curious if anyone here knows more about these "HP Envy x360" models supposedly with 8th gen i5s and DDR3. My main concern is whether or not it will have pcie / nvme ssd support...

Very unhappy with mine and with HP. I bought the 13" highest-end Spectre x360 back in June, and last week it just died on me. Wouldn't boot up. Charging light would light up, but that's it - power button did nothing, and a hard-reset didn't help. Got on HP customer support chat and they quickly offered to repair it under warranty. Sent me a box and packing material and a pre-paid label. They received it on the day before Thanksgiving.

Today I get into chat with them to get an update and I'm told that although the box they received it in showed no damage, the laptop inside has significant damage. I shipped them a laptop without a scratch on it, and the picture they sent me was of one that had a ton of damage - bottom busting open, USB port squashed, etc. They of course are claiming I sent them a physically damaged laptop, whereas I can only assume their tech dropped it or ran it over with his chair or something. "Sorry, nothing we can do. We're a reputable company and would never damage your laptop."

Black Friday Pricing out the door was $899 plus going through a deal site saved me another 2.5% off of that. I'm absolutely loving this machine so far.

I already have a gaming beast, I needed light, very portable and fast with privacy and this fits the bill nicely. 16GB of memory and a 512 SSD.

Surprisingly the sound this thing produces is astonishing for such a small package. So happy I went with the 1920x1080 and not the 4k screen, it is gorgeous.

The only thing so far that I dont like or find annoying is the micro-SD card slot, it allows the card to stick out just the tiniest bit, that I wish was flush with the case.

Funnily enough amazon had 13.3 bags popup for sale from PureBox for $0.90 cents a piece they were almost sold out but I managed to snag 2 of them before they were gone. 2 bags for under $2 with Prime shipping! There really nice padded bags which is surprising because I figured for that price they would be crap.

That's a good looking machine you have listed if you are in the market for a 15.6 inch notebook. I'm sticking with the 13.3 which doesn't have the AMD option yet.

I've been living with this lappy for about a month now and wrote this for the Best Buy website but will share it here too. Specs in Sig line. Pros: brilliant 4k display (to which you can stream HDR video from Netflix or other providers!)...works with my Razer Core gaming dock letting me game almost like a desktop when connected to the Core on my desk...solid keyboard with good feel and travel on the keys...large touchpad with good feel and control...good sound level (with tricks...see below) although like almost every lappy without a subwoofer it's a bit base deficient. Cons...often runs a bit warm on your lap streaming 4k HDR vid (a lapboard of some type eliminates this and helps the sound)...no HDMI port for monitor output (requires a usb-c to hdmi dongle if you need this)...a bit klunky @ 2.8 lbs in tablet mode. Exploits: YEAH it works with the Razer Core out of the box allowing me to drive a GTX 1080 external video card and 4k HDR external display. No add'l drivers for the Core are required but you will have to load the NVIDIA drivers for whatever video card you have in the Core before it will work as designed...not a hard process. ANY OF THIS 4K HDR STUFF REQUIRES THAT WINDOWS 10 BE (free through Windows Update) UPGRADED TO VERSION 1709xx or better. To do full 4k HDR on the external display you will need to shift to 10 bit color (YCbCr422 color format & 10bpc color depth in Nvidia Control Panel) and of course your external display must be at least capable of YCbCr422/10bpc. If all this is met 4k UHD HDR gaming is possible! On the INTERNAL DISPLAY forget anything but light gaming...to be expected on a 2.8 lb laptop. BUT 4k UHD HDR video streaming to the internal display possible IF you completely remove the HP provided driver (do this from APPS page of settings and restart otherwise the Intel driver refuses to install) for the integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics card and then install the latest graphics driver for the UHD 620 from the intel website (23 series or better) and PRESTO you will see the 4K UHD and HDR tags appear (assuming you have upgraded your Netflix acct. to subscribe to this and don't forget to change the settings to allow high data usage/high quality vid...FIGURE ON 5-7 GB/HR DATA USAGE FOR THIS!!) on your Netflix faves like Stanger Things, Marco Polo etc. Then make sure the windows settings for HDR are turned on in the Display Settings page...one at the top for Stream HDR Video and one at the bottom...UNCHECK the box for Don't Stream HDR Video on Battery. Choose your show...watch screen brightness jump to full if you're on AC power...on battery you have to do it manually...and sit back and watch the beautiful video stream! Ok...full disclosure: Intel says this is NOT full HDR video but EDR (Extended Dynamic Range) since the integrated display is only an 8-bit panel...but I gotta tell you it's GOOD! I can hardly distinguish it from the real thing on my fully 10 bit capable eternal monitor. NOTHING I have recommended or described here should affect your warranty status...it's all software driven except the acquisition of the Core and whatever video card you put in it...IF YOU WANT HDR ON YOUR EXTERNAL MONITOR IT'S GOTTA BE A 10xx SERIES CARD WITH AT LEAST 3GB OF RAM!! Next one: the sound. Go into an app called Bang & Olufsen Control (already installed by HP) click the OUTPUT tab and shift it to the mode of your choice (movie/music/voice) and turn all the sliders up full. Volume will increase DRMATICALLY! It will be skewed to the high end of the spectrum but there will actually be some bass audible now. Adjust sliders to taste. If the sound level drops...which mine does occasionally after a system restart just go to the GENERAL tab and click DEFAULT SETTINGS. Then repeat the above OUTPUT setting procedure and the (otherwise deficient)volume returns! And if none of this does it for you, I can tell you that the sound with my AKG earbuds plugged in is excellent! Ok...last one. I purchased a generic usb-c dongle to provide an extra usb-a 3.0 port/hdmi out/additional usb-c port. This machine ONLY has 2 usb-c's (one of which will be your power connector when plugged in) one usb-a 3.0 port and micro SD card slot. That's it! You might not need more but I do. Hope this helps someone. A lot of the above is advanced work but it CAN be done if you want. It took me about a week to get it all up and operating. BOTTOM LINE: THIS IS A FANTASTIC LITTLE LAPTOP which will do so much more than you think if you want to put a little work into it. Otherwise just open the box and use it...with the sound exploit...and the 4k display and the Coffee Lake (8th gen) processor it will leave you impressed!!

Orionz, thankyou for all the tips.
One small point - you mention the two USB-C ports and using one for charging whilst an adapter is connected to the other.
Never fear - USB-C adapters which have power passthrough are available. For instance the Hyperdrive product https://www.hypershop.com/products/hyperdrive-usb-type-c-hub-with-4k-hdmi-support

So to set up your home or office docking station, all you need is a hub lik ethis, with a USB-C power supply already hooked up, plus the HDMI to the monitor. One connection will dock you.

I would really like a USB-C monitor though. Does anyone have good recommendations?

Hi everyone, glad to have found this thread!

I've just got myself one of the new x360s (i7, 16GB ram, 1tb SSD). (Merry Christmas everyone!)

So far I have used Windows Update and the HP Support Assistant app to update drivers etc.

I was just looking through settings and noticed the 'Fresh start' option in Windows Defender which looks like it does something like a clean install of Windows and will get rid of some of the bloatware. I was just wondering whether anyone has used this feature before, and whether they'd recommend me using it on my new laptop? I'm currently a bit concerned it might clear some important software that I might not know to reinstall afterwards... have I got anything to be worried about?

    Cheers!

Haven't used the FRESH START option...so I have no opinion on that. BUT...if you download Win10 ver 1709 (Fall Creators Update) via Microsoft's Media Creation Tool when you run the install program there is an option to install without saving files, apps or settings...that's a CLEAN INSTALL. The other thing to look for is a folder on your C: drive called SWSetup. It has all the HP proprietary software (you might call it bloat...or not). Save that folder on a usb drive or microSD and it can be used to restore the HP software after you do that clean install! Most of the HO stuff is optional...except for the software for Thunderbolt 3...thunderbolt devices won't work without it. Of course if you're not using thunderbolt devices it becomes optional too!

Does anyone find the new HP Spectre x360 8th gen to run very hot and therefore hard to sit on your lap?

I see numerous different opinions on the topic

There is no doubt this thing gets warm sitting on your lap. I don't have a heat gun so I can't give you a temperature fo60 r the exterior of the lappy. HWINFO64 shows the cores of the chip running about 60 Degrees C as I type this. They of course will run warmer during more intense tasks...in my case 90C while streaming 4K video in a 74 degree room. That's (at least bordering on) hot especially if it's sitting on your skin. BUT the case is thin and the chip sits right in the center of the base at the screen edge...so if the chip gets warm so will your lap. I switch to tent mode to mitigate this when it bothers me. Temperature is a highly subjective thing...no two people sense it alike. I suggest trying viewing video on it in a store with it on your lap before deciding whether it works for you or not.

Thanks for that. Yes I did try it in the store. It didn't seem that much hotter to the touch than my 2016 Macbook Pro 13 i7. I was quite surprised given how much smaller the chasis is and how much more powerful the CPU is

    Hi all, I'm back.

I still love this system. I just got a ASUS MB16AC portable USB-C monitor for being on the road.

I haven't looked that closely... is anything different on the newest models other than the fingerprint reader and the 8th Gen processors? The specs (while could be wrong) say there's 1x USB-C and 1x Thunderbolt...

Next step for me is to change the SSD to a Samsung 960 PRO.

Does anyone know here, I've seen multiple reviews talking about the 8th gen units now come with a rechargeable pen instead of the AAAA battery. Most reports I see talk about the Spectre 13 getting the new pen. According to hps website they come with the same pen so just curious. Ordered mine a week or so ago says it will ship the 11th.

Got the 15 with 4k 16gb ram 512 SSD in Ash silver. Won't use the pen a whole lot which is why I'm really hoping its rechargeable instead of requiring a battery!

    *****EDIT*****

Figured I would ask another question while no one has responded yet.

Has anyone disassembled the laptop and replaced the heatsink paste right away? Is there any benefit? Not sure how great hp stuff is from the factory I think I have some Arctic 5 left over from when I built my desktop and also redid the paste on my older hp laptop from about 8yrs ago (dv7t-3300cto quad i7) and that seems to run cooler and as a result smoother.

Figured i would add another post now that i have the laptop.

Does anyone have any issues with apps not staying uninstalled or certain settings not sticking through a reboot.

I just got my 15" yesterday and going through the setup i have tried uninstalling all the retarded games that come preinstalled. I right click them in the start menu and select uninstall, it asks to confirm and then it will disappear. Minecraft, disney, candy saga, and like 3 others.

They do not show up in remove programs and thats the only way i can see to uninstall them is through the start menu.

I have also tried to remove the hp support assistant bubble by the status bar.

Now heres the problem, everything looks great until i reboot. upon reboot everything is back in the menu and the support bubble is down by the status bar again. the only thing i havent tried is booting into safe mode to remove but that should not be a requirement to get rid of that crap.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Im so close to wiping out that copy of windows and starting fresh from a clean microsoft image. The only thing that worries me about that is when i did the same thing with my old hp dv7t quad core the laptop did not run as smooth as the factory image, even though i installed all hp drivers.

Also the laptop does seem somewhat sluggish to me, my desktop i built last year has 16gb ram, 256 ssd, and an 15-6600k and seems to run circles around it, i know the spectre uses a U processor which wont be as fast as the desktop counterpart. I figured 2 generations later and a quad core should at least be somewhat comparable. Im also not expecting it to run heavy tasks at the same speed but simple things like opening file explorer, or chrome should be just as fast imho. Opening simple apps that should not struggle seem to take a second or two to load and ive already had chrome not responding a few times as well. the desktop is blistering fast, i feel like apps open before im even done double clicking, not so much with the new spectre.

Oh well maybe my expectations are a little too high but i will keep playing with it, and probably reimage the thing to a debloated factory m$ image and try to rip out cortana and all the tracking crap.

Sorry for the rant but 1600$ later i feel like it should be a little snappier and let me permanently uninstall junk that shouldnt be there in the first place!!

Yes, my 8th gen Spectre x360 came with the rechargeable pen.

I'm having a bit of difficulty with my touchpad at the moment and i'm trying to work out whether it's a hardware issue, or whether I accidentally removed the most recent drivers when i used the Windows 10 'Fresh Start' program to run a clean install.

Could someone please check their driver version for me?

My current driver version is 19.3.31.31 (found by going to Control Panel -> Mouse -> Hardware -> Properties -> Driver).

    Thanks!

Hi - very interested in owner feedback on the Spectre x360 Sure View functionality. Any opinions valued!

(eg: does the functionality decrease the screen brightness / clarity when OFF?)

Has anyone else gotten the HDR for Netflix to work on the internal display? I uninstalled the stock Intel GPU driver, updated to the most recent official one but have no option to see any HDR content. I am on the best Netflix plan and have tried via App and on the EDGE browser.

Orionz talked about an HDR option in the display settings. Can anyone point me as to where it`s located? Haven`t found it so far. I am on the 15`` 4k late 2017 model.

Edit: I found where it should be located, but have no option to enable it. Seems a bit strange to me.

So I got my HP x360 13 inch from best buy and it must be a last years 8th gen model since mine came with a AAAA pen. And the bios is f.02 versus the newer f.15.

I replaced the thermal paste with mx4. (By the way, this is a real pain in the ass IMO, there are so many little things to break in there) The results are amazing. I undervolted around -420mV and the highest temps on battery are 65c and when on AC, they are 85-88c even under full 30 watt load when playing games. It's actually quite amazing. I do quite a bit with my x360. At my desk I used a dock thats attached to a 1080p 144hz display and it doesn't skip a beat. I came from an Alienware 13R3 and I literally can't tell the difference in everything but gaming tasks. It's actually faster then the 7700hq (I score 9500 in passmark since swapping out the thermal paste)

It idles in the .5 watt area and this keeps the temps sub 40c almost all the time. Even when watching a 4k 60fps youtube video, the temps barely hit above 55 even when docked on my display at work. it should idle near 35-40c (depending on ambient temps) with no problem. If yours is warm doing basic tasks, something is wrong. If anybody wants any videos of temps doing some tasks let me know!

Let me know if you have any questions, I can do a better job if asked a single question lol rather than my mind throwing out all this data at you.

Can anyone else confirm this for me? I feel like the mouse cursor lags a lot (like the screen is set to 40hz) but when I click and drag, the mouse becomes smooth again. Sometimes it's smooth after a restart sometimes it's laggy.

Like as I type this, it become smooth again. So maybe it's after typing the cursor becomes smooth. I need to test this but let me know if anybody else has this same chain of events.

For reference I have an 8th gen 13 x360 with the precision drivers enabled

EDIT: Figured it out. If you have precision drivers enabled AND the synaptics utility installed at the same time, they can fight back and fourth. If you want "MacBook" like scrolling, disable everything in the synaptics screen and let the "touchpad" settings area be in control of two finger scrolling. Now go into regedit and find these keys "Inertia" and "Friction" and they are located here

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Wisp > Touch

    Inertia = 0
    Friction = 0

    This makes scrolling feel perfect.

More Info: The x360 supports PD of 14.5v as well on the USB C charging ports which means the 12 inch MacBook power brick works.

It supports 5 volt USB charging but only when the laptop is off. Gains about 1% every 10 minutes on a iPhone 5w charger.

The mouse lag has to do with iGPU power saving features. The trackpad feels amazing when it's on an external monitor and that really confused me at first. I could seriously not use a mouse if I always had an external monitor attached, that's how well the trackpad performs.. Well come to find out, intel tells the display to refresh when it wants too called "panel self refresh" and this drops the internal frame rate but not in windows so the panel still appears in windows to be refreshing properly. This isn't normally a bad thing but it's sure as well is annoying to feel that lag in the mouse when the panel deems not enough pixels are changing to warrant the self refresh rate to jump back up to 60.

Go into the Intel HD control panel and disable ALL power saving features. I don't notice any change in battery life and my trackpad feels really good now!
