I see a laptop I want on ebay. It is being offered brand new, sealed in the box (unopened) for a decent price shipped. I want to buy it. However, I am am concerned about two things:
1) The seller said if the laptop, although highly unlikely, arrives to me DOA then I must take it up with HP. Does this make any sense? Would this fly with HP?
2) Will HP honor warranty/service requests/support for a brand new laptop purchased from someone off of eBay?
Let me know of your experience.
Thanks

Well I just called HP and the person I spoke to informed me the warranty starts on the day the laptop was originally purchased, regardless of wither or not it has been opened or if the box is still sealed or if/when it is "registered" with them.
So if these characters selling these laptops on eBay purchased them 3 months ago and the laptops only came with 1 year warranties, then if this is true I would only have 9 months warranty left on the laptop.
I'm calling them again to clarify the difference between when it is sold to a big box company such as Wal-Mart or Best Buy versus some guy who just resells them.
UPDATE: They've informed me that essentially what the difference is. The warranty kicks in the moment the laptop is purchased by any person, company or entity that is NOT an Authorized Reseller. So an Authorized Reseller can sit on a laptop for an infinite amount of time and then randomly sell it to Joe Smoe (just some guy, not a reseller) and the warranty will kick-in/start at that moment. But if Joe buys it from HP, Best Buy or some other authorized reseller and sits on it (unopened, still sealed and not registered) for 3 months, he has just wasted 3 months of the 12-month warranty. -
Could you buy an additional protection plan if you didn't buy it from an authorized dealer?
-
...of course you can. However, extended warranties are nontransferable.
-
One question I should ask: are the original warranties even transferable to begin with!?
-
Yes they are...

Alrighty then.................................

They will i went to sell a dv4t on ebay and checked with the HP case manager that the 2 year accidential warrenty it had would transfer. He said warrentys go with the system not the owner.

Machines have a build date on them as well. If there is no proof of purchase, that can be used to honor a warranty. Business notebooks have 3 years.. so EBAY purchase of those should be fine.
There is also a warranty checker on HP's website. Key in the model and serial and it will tell you when it is warrantied till. -

Actually, if you purchase the notebook from ebay during its original warranty you can call up HP and buy an extended warranty.
Extended Warranties are non-transferable though as mentioned above. -
The poster above mentioned that extended warranties go with the system, not the owner. This would make it transferable, wouldn't it? It transfer with the ownership of the laptop, but not the owner. -

I bought an extended warranty (2yr) on the system in my .sig and asked *specifically* if I were to resell the system, does the warranty go with it and they said yes. I can't vouch for the accidental warranty, but the normal extended warranty was a yes.
Once it is registered and updated, you get a nifty confirmation letter in the mail and the system then shows up online under warranty check with the new extended warranty (which takes place from the sale date), so for me, it is January 30th 2009-2011. -
I bought a new dv6810us from ebay in Sept., the warranty had started in March, I had a bad RAM stick go bad, chatted with, im sure, an Indian tech since his/her English seemed abit funny. A few days later a shipping box arrived, but I decided to sell it instead
now Im looking at some laptops(come on MS 25% cashback) on ebay and was wondering how good squaretrade is, I havent read anything horrible, but I havent really looked. -
Use this website to obtain a precise warranty date of purchase and expiry:
http://www11.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447626+1235914942244+28353475
Also ask the seller to provide a tax receipt not a PAYPAL or eBay receipt; if they cannot print one out yourself or ask them to make one up. This will cover all your bases. Also make sure that when you receive the item the box is fully sealed.
HP warranties are international and they are user-transferable second-hand, third-hand, etc, as long as they fall within the warranty period.
