I have an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with Windows 7. It has not been used much and has always worked well.

The HP Support Assistant told me I had very important updates including BIOS.
I only selected the updates that were on the critical list and updated.
After the update, the WiFi quit working and the laptop can only access the internet via Ethernet cable.
I rolled back a few days via system restore without it fixing the problem so I undid the restore.
I went into the manage wireless networks screen, deleted the connection, rebooted for rediscovery and typed in the passkey. The WiFi worked again.
The next time I started the laptop was 2 days later. The WiFi is not working again and the previous fix will not work. It will no longer accept the passkey.

HP wants to charge me to fix what they broke and I don't have the funds right now. They even hung up on me although I never raised my voice.

I checked the drivers and nothing seemed newer than a few years old. Any ideas what to do?

Do you have the recovery cd/dvd for the hp? If you do that be the first I try to restore the laptop to factory settings and see if the wifi works that will tell you if the wifi is working or gone bad. Also which exact model of DV7 are you talking about? Need more info as to which particular model your talking about? Otherwise take out the wifi and start the laptop and then power off then replace the wifi and reboot and see if that doesn't detect or fix it.

Thanks for the response. The sticker says dv7-4285dx
No disc but I believe there is a restore partition on the laptop however I am hoping to avoid having to image and restore programs and maybe re-register software.

Will have to research removal of the WiFi.

Resolved the situation. After the update, the passkey would no longer work but pushing the button on the router reconnected me.
