when i bought my notebook, on the hp home and home office store, when i customized the notebook i want to purchase it says there 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive , but now when I look at Click Start > Help & Support , then System Information \hardware \ harddrive.. the specification i saw in the Interface column was IDE. should it be SATA and not IDE??

I got bothered by this.. if i should be seeing a SATA instead of IDE, then i could return this to hp. am i right?

    Questions:

    1) What model of notebook?
    2) Did you reinstall XP?
    3) Did you turn off ACHI or SATA mode in BIOS?

A laptop that comes with a SATA drive cannot fit an IDE drive within...the two interfaces are physically different. The BIOS can 'emulate' an IDE interface if you have a SATA one...but that is it.

You have a SATA drive and a SATA controller as indicated by the bold text. IDE is usually used as a synonym for ATA.
