I have to say, I have been VERY happy with the tech support that I have received form HP. I had some problems with the speaker on my DV7t-2000, and the HP tech support has been very helpful. They originally told me (after a phone conversation/attempted fix) that they would be sending me a box to send the computer in for a fix. I just got off the phone with them, and they told me that they will be sending a new version with updated specifications, mainly a 2.26ghz quad core processor (up from a 2.4ghz dual core), and 500gb worth of hard drive space (up from 320gb). They will also be giving me a fingerprint scanner and a more powerful wireless card.
All in all, I have to say that they have been FANTASTIC. I have heard horror stories about HP, but they seem to be just fine.

The left speaker was crackling. I woke up one morning, turned on some music, and heard an annoying "buzzing" sound. I couldn't live with it, so I gave them a call. -

How did you manage to get better hardware? Did they offer it to you first, or did you ask about getting something better? -
yeah....HP is renowned to not budge from it's stance, all calls get diverted to india/china....then u need to spell out the state, city you live in and THEN they say well...you will have to pay for this sir...(i tried getting recovery disks......and they said well we won't give you recovery disks...if you want to recover/reimage the drive then you need to PAY)
-
I don't understand why you think you should get it for free. When I bought my hdx16, I added the recovery disk too for $19. No new computer comes with them now standard.
-
i think i should have got the recovery disks for free cause my laptop gives me an error saying " that i don't have a dvd writer drive please contact HP" though i have a dvd writer in my laptop and i didn't change it and i use it to write dvds with nero,
so what do u think??
they told me i should pay , its there fault i can't write recovery disks , i tried reinstalling windows, updating bios , updating hp drivers everything -

They offered it to me. I was sitting at my desk and they called me, and they basically said that since the model was new, they were just going to give me a new computer. They read through the specs of the new computer, and they were better. -
I'm sorry to say but I think it is your fault. 95% of computer issues are the users' fault. All computers even crappy $400 ones come with a dvd burner now. It looks like a software issue on vista's side. Do a google search about it like "can't create vista boot disc".
Otherwise, give HP the $19 for a disc and stop moaning. They dont owe you a thing. -
The original poster is saying he is getting a 2.26Ghz Quad core laptop as a replacement for a 2.4Ghz Dual Core. When did intel or AMD release 2.26Ghz Quad Core chips?
I think he is probably getting a 2.26Ghz dualcore system. That said geting a replacement system for just a broken speaker without them even trying to fix it is strange unless it's in the 30 day return period. -

Actually, I am getting the 2.26ghz quadcore. I remember because when they said it, I about went into shock
. It was a fairly expensive upgrade. I may have the clock wrong, but I know for a fact I am getting a quadcore. The model number had a "Q" in it, and the guy said it was a quad.
It was kind of strange for them to just replace it, especially as it is out of the 30 day return period (I believe). The reason they are doing it, they said, is because the computer is a "new" model (it is the refreshed Dv7). Whatever the reason, I am not complaining. I am very happy with the service so far, and I let them know that. Maybe HP is finally cleaning up their act.

The problem is with Nero. It installed a service that takes total control of writing to your DVD/CD drive. If you stop the Nero services you can then create the recovery discs.

The guy put the order through when I was on the phone with him. But we will have to see. -
this happened to me just after i bought the laptop ( first few days ) how can it be my fault? , its there bundled software fault that can't write recovery DvD in my laptop
-
i fully uninstalled nero and tried , and then i also reinstalled windows from the recovery drive and tried again and i get the same error.
-
That error message is caused by a program having control of the drive. Did yours come with Cyberlink DVD Suite?
-
yes it came preinstalled with the laptop , i also tried uninstalling it ><
-
Hey there,
when I bought my dv5 I encountered the same problem with not being able to burn the recovery. same error message also.
In my case, the real problem was the dvd-burning device itself. Did you try to burn another dvd than the recoverys? Does your computer play normal dvds? mine didnt... so I called hp-support. UPS-procedure, blabla,... and just a week later i got my laptop back from repair, with a new drive installed.
everything's fine now.
germany here, support experience elsewhere may vary
-
yea i did burn with nero to check before reinstalling windows.
-
The recovery partition is built into the hard drive too you should have used that you didnt need discs.
-
incidentally i wanted to pay for it, sorry didn't mention that, but they said we don't ship them anymore, thus you need to pay for reimage, i said to %$^#^ to them, and perhaps get someone else's OS for install...heck the HP mini my wife has gets a recovery disk and IT HAS NO ODD...so whaaat is going on?

Okay, so the replacement computer came today. It has a few upgrades, mainly the Quad Core 2.26ghz (up from a dual core 2.4ghz.) So all in all, I can't say I have any real problems with HP tech support.
The only problem is, the computer is not booting up. But I think I will be able to fix that myself. The only problem is a "No bootable device" message. I am following the directions, though, so I will get it straightened out at some point.
