    hey.

I'm in Canada, and interested in getting a customized dv6000t. The problem is that on the Canadian HP site, this model is not available and you can not customize laptops on the Canadian site.

Is there any way that I can buy from the US HP site, and get to product to Canada?

    thanx

ya I do know cousins that live in San Diego.

I had already thought of that, I just dont know if I would need to pay customs when they send it over the border. maybe if they mark it as a gift?

So I guess I cannot get them to ship to Canada. darn

If you get an HP from the States and live in Canada, any warranty claims will have to be through HP USA. Too much of a hassle IMO

Yea, the warranty issues would be interesting...

You might want to check out the HP business laptops, like the 15.4" nx7400 and nc8430. Both are better than the dv6000t in terms of build quality, but the GPUs differ so you'll have to think about your gaming desires. I think that there are options for you to purchase a world-wide warranty on those models, so your US based family could order it (if you cannot) and ship it to you without trouble.

AFAIK, you have to declare to customs the value of the notebook, but stating it is a gift would probably make things easier. If it costs a little extra to ship it this way, consider what you apparently cannot get from HP Canada...

I've always wondered why HP shafted our northern cousins... :(

you will most likely have warranty issues with a US model in Canada.
Contact HP Canada before you do it to be safe.

I was very interested in the Sony AR series laptops with the 17" screen. Seems Sonystyle and SonyStores only have the top model AR290 at $3300.
The Ar series is totally customizable in the US Sony stores. Yet when i called Sony Canada of GordonBaker Rd i was advise the US lap would have to be sent back to US for any issues.

Damn, I want this so bad, but alas I am in Canada as well. On the Canadian website they have the notebook on the site if you search for it, but there is no option to purchase it. Perhaps if you call them they can explain it?

You can purchase Canadian warranty if you want to but I think it's about $200 CDN for 1 year. Generally the machines are pretty well built overall if you buy "business class" which would be something like an HP/Compaq NC8430 (like mine) or even Lenovo Thinkpads or Dell Latitude machines (D820 comes to mind). Will you really have to worry about warranty service? Hopefully not. If there is a significant price difference (like $500 CDN or so) then it may be worth getting it AND picking up the warranty. FYI, I like the build of the HPs better than Dells (had a D810 before) and it is also a little lighter overall.

Do your research and take the plunge; only you can decide if it's worth it.

Sorry, I forgot to mention; factor in the GST/PST when considering importing (they will hit you for the stated value). There will also be some brokerage and duties (I think computers may be duty free). It's a bit of a PITA but if you find a good one at a good price you can save yourself a few bucks.
