I have a older HP 6910p laptop that I am prep'ing for use in my Digital Camera bag. I thought it might be nice to install a WWAN card, in the laptop in case, I am out and need access to the internet in some place that does not support Wi-Fi and the like.

I am looking at the WWAN card from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330402369988

I have a couple of questions:

    1) My laptop has two Antenna leads in the port area for the WWAN card and the MC8775 has only 1 Antenna connector, will it work OK with only the one Antenna lead and which of the two leads should I connect?

    2) Will I be able to use the SIM card from my iPhone in the Laptop with no additional plan or service then the data plan that is already provided by the iPhone/AT&T plan?

    3) How does the GPS function work on these WWAN cards?

Thanx in advance for any help or suggestions.

    1. One antenna should work just fine, two antennas give better reception in some cases.
    2. Like they would know the difference... (actually they can, but do they care?)

    4. Do you know for sure that card is whitelisted in 6910p bios? If it is not, computer probably does not boot with it. That's why I bought un2400 from ebay for my mini5101 :p

IS that a half mini size? I think the Envy requires a half mini size to fit the socket. I changed my WIFI card and I used a half mini size and not the full size.

The un2400 is full size like the mc8775 in that picture.

I have no knowledge of half-size WWAN cards, does the Envy even have place for sim reader, is there any models with integrated 3G?

That doesn't need an iphone, any modern cellphone made in 2000-2010 can do that, only the most basic phones lack internal modem.

I do understand that, yet the op did reference having an iphone.
In addition, many providers nix the use of tethering on their versions of firmware, many times users have to de-brand the phone to gain tethering.

Not to turn this into an Apple iPhone thread, but I thought that AT&T, killed the tethering feature?

I also want the capability of using the WWAN card so I can work on photos on the laptop and directly link to the web without having to connect the phone, hence the reason for the question.

I am also hoping that MAYBE :) there will be a work around from/for the iPad mini SIM, and I can get that "all you can eat" 30.oo$ a month data only plan, but until that time I want the option of using the iPhone SIM without having to get a 60.oo a month data plan.

That could be sim card from a broken iphone :p Actually I did somehow miss that and I did wonder why someone would shell out 999 euros into an iPhone, when any other manufacturer can do it a lot cheaper :D (that much I'd have to pay for brand new iPhone, if I wanted to have it unlocked and use it with my current operator)

That feature disabling is fortunately pretty much nonexistent here, especially when data transfer speeds and reliability is the thing operators compete with each others. No operator would sell phone "you can have internet connection with speeds up to 21mbit with it... but you can't connect it with your laptop..." Lucky for us, the second one they compete with are the prices.

But to stay on-topic for a change, once you have used laptop with integrated WWAN, you dont want to look back playing with usb cables or bluetooth.

My unlimited data plan is 9.80e / month :p Speed is limited to 3G only tho but I have 2 sim cards with the price of one.

Yeah we don't get the tether option(in the US), for a bit here you could download the one file from the BenQ site, but when the newer Firmware for the iPhone came out there turned that option off. I understand that there is still a way to do it with out "jailbreaking" the phone, but why bother when for 40.oo$US I can get a WWAN Card. I can live with the 3G speed, even if it is only like 1Mb down here.
