Hey guys, I will recieve my Zz5000 in a few weeks, and I got a question.
from what I've read, if you do not have the OEM OS installed, you will void the warranty.. I ordered winXP home in order to save some money, because I got a corp edition of winXP Pro sitting around that I will install on the laptop. Plus it will get rid of all the extra crap that would probably be on the laptop.
However, If I need to take it back in for a warranty thing, can I just install the windows from the HP CD, and call it a day? Or even better, would they really care if I used winXP Pro from another source instead of the HP disk?

i've heard this too, if I was you to be safe I would install the HP version before sending it backjust to be safe.

There shouldn't be any problem of you using an OS other than the one provided. I think the main issue they have is if your problem is with the OS and not hardware, they won't give you support in that case since it's not their OS load. Since the OS will not cause any damage to the hardware, you should be fine. If in doubt, just do like DaGreek recommended, just reload the HP OS disc before sending in for repair.

A couple of weeks ago I sent back a Compaq Presario 1722 basically to have it refurbed (new lcd screen & top shell, new keyboard, and new casing w/ touchpad). The unit was nearing the end of year 2 of a three year extended warranty.
Anyway, the unit came from the factory w/ WinXP Home. After getting the unit home, it was nuked and WinXP Pro was installed.
The (HP) warranty centre did ask me what OS I was running when I called in for service. It didn't seem to bother them that I was running a different OS.
Btw, HP-Canada had a warranty-box shipped to my office the very next day. Then it was picked up and air-shipped to the warranty centre. If it wasn't for the Canada-Day holidays (July 1st) which delayed some parts, the turn-around would have only been 5 business days!
