    Hi,
I needed an explanation on Hp Warranty
I bought My Laptop Roughly a year and a half ago, in the starting 6 months both my Hard disk and dvd drive had failed, seeing the failure rate i bought a 2 year add on care package which suprisingly only covered hardware and the service center promised support for Software (?)

I have a Couple of Questions
    1. what does it mean that only hardware is supported , i mean if my hard disk fails and they replace it , will they not install the OS, and if they will not then how will i install it my self as they have not given the OS disk ?? I know i own the license key thus i own the OS

    2. After 3 years , lets say my hdd fails and i install an aftermarket hdd, how will i install the OS ??

    3. I know HP tells you to make the recovery disks , but what if i do not make them or they get ruined and wont work then what will i do ??

Another Question , this is more for a recommended config

I need a 17inch Laptop for Normal work, what would be a good configuration for 1500$ ??

thanks in advance, The warranty part is really confusing

Why dont you just burn the restore DVD's in the first place? After all it only take 2 DVD' plus an hour or so? If you are under warranty and restore DVD's dont work then you can request a replacement free of charge. Sofware support usually means for issues related to software, not any hardware related failures. So, if your HDD fails they will reimage the HDD and send the system back.

Usually software support only lasts for the first 90 days. However, if you ask them about an OS replacement disc, they aren't very reluctant.

They don't usually send the hard drives with an operating system on it. It's only done if you send in the laptop for repair.

Infamous, thank you for awnsering my question, yes i know that its for 90 days, i was merely refering to the OS, About the disk, um Mine were, yes i Know its only installed when they are replaced

Maybe I was not able to explain myself, what i am saying is that
lets say after my warranty expires and my hard disk fails and do not want to buy another hdd from HP's Service center and buy an aftermarket upgrade, how am i going to install the OS, Because my service center are reluctant to give the OS dvd,

p.s. I'm From India, which Might Explain the Crappyness of The Service, will writing a letter to the Company Help in this regard or a call to tech support

    2. You will have to either get a restore DVD from HP which will cost(last time I checked it was around ~$15 in the US) if you dont have warranty coverage. Alternatively, if you can get hold of a Vista DVD you can install and activate using the key stuck to the bottom of your notebook.

    3. same as what I answered in my other post. Alternatively you can again do an install using a Vista DVD and use the key stuck to the bottom of the notebook to do a clean install.

overall, you have three options of the HDD fails...
    1. use the restore DVD's
    2. If you dont have those or it doesnt work, then either get a replacement DVD from HP or use a retail Vista DVD and the key from the bottom of the notebook and install the OS. The drivers are available online from HP.com so there shouldnt be any issues to get the system back up and running in any event.

Well, not sure in India. MS used to sell Vista upgrade DVD's which were sold without any license but were the same as any Vista DVD and can be used to do a clean install using the license stuck to the bottom of the notebook. However, they dont sell these any more. You might however still find some online on ebay or maybe borrow from someone.
