The situation: Last September I bout a HP Compaq 2108CL Notebook not wanting it, but needing something asap. I planned to use Sam's 6 month return policy and return it and get something better. Needless to say I forgot and couldn't find the receipt in time. By that time the mute button had stopped working, the wireless on & off button stopped working and overheating problems began.

So here we are 4 months after those and I dropped it breaking the LCD screen. I contacted tech support 3 times. First call I was simply told to schedule a pick up time and would be told charges later. Next during an online chat I talked to someone. I wondered if they could just send me a screen and I was told to have it sent in and call tech support. I called them and I got outsourced again so I immediately hung up.

Now the real question. I used the little parts surfer and saw that screen cost $725. I don't have accidental damage protection so I would theoretically have to pay that much wouldn't I? I don't want to be without my PC for anytime and learned I could get a screen for about $300 used locally or ebay for about $250. So would having HP fix it save me any money?

I plan on getting a R4000 soon. Preferrably before school starts if I can talk the folks into it. Only problem is I was told I can't get a new PC every year lol. But these overheating problems are upsetting me considering how much I paid for the thing. My hard drive even vibrates somewhat now. It never did that before.

I don't see the point in investing in parts for this machine if you're going to move on. The screen repair from HP is cost prohibitive and not covered under warranty. Buying one off eBay might work, but then you need to find someone qualified to put it in for you. Make sure you get an exact match or it might not connect properly.

I got some one who said they would install it for $50. I go the part number from HP as well. I was just wondering if the warranty would help at all. Now that I know I'll go ahead and do this. I could always sell this once I move on. Thank You.

Yep, the DIY fix sounds like a winner for you.
