    Hey,

Just a quick question. I was wondering if it is possible to change or replace the existing network card in my HP Pavilion Dv6000 ?

    Thanks

As a rule, not without hacking the BIOS to kill the whitelist HP uses to block unapproved cards. They swear the FCC made them do it even though no one else does.

Technically, should be easy. Flip it over and take off the plate for your ram. Look for the icons. Move the two clips away from the card and it should pop up. Pop off the antenna wires. Reverse all of this with your new card. Install drivers if necessary.

it's not welded in...held in by 2 screws under the plate that houses the memory also. takes about 2-5 minutes.

I have an older HP notebook intel centrino with XP. It has the intel 2200 card. I tried looking under the RAM plate but its not like the Dv6000. Is it possible to remove the card from one notebook and place it in the other ?

What model HP notebook do you have, exactly?

EDIT: You mentioned you have a dv6000, nevermind. I don't know the answer to your question, sorry.

The HP service guide for your notebook will have a list of HP part numbers. Those will be safe. There might be one or two that aren't listed but I wouldn't bet on it. Search eBay for whichever part number looks interesting.

That BIOS whitelist is the one thing that really, really infuriates me about HP. I've refurbished a couple of Dell notebooks lately and you can throw pretty much anything into them. I still lean towards HP though.

Nope. You won't hurt anything by trying an unapproved card though if you happen to have one.

Also will there be any difference between these 2 cards ? Performance related i mean. Will one pick up a better signal than the other ?

Or is there a way to change the ID of the card to make it acceptable instead of playing with the bios ?
