Ok just ordered 2 sticks of 512 KVR533D2S4/512 from memoryforeless.com, of course I am impulsive and tend to jump the gun so i ordered it without alot of background research.

I called Kingston about this RAM's compatibility with the ZD8000 and they had told me that it was going to be hit or miss weather it works or not, Kingston value ram is made from the same wafer as the high end ram, there are no different specs between the high end and low end ram of the same class; the difference is where they are cut from from the wafer..

During chip production there is a circle of silicon, nice and shiny until the memory chip is imposed on them, each chip is a square block with kingstons design for the memory chip in it.

here is a picture of a wafer to help explain what I am talking about.

    http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/admin/pgbrochure/largeimages/wafer.jpg

If you put an inner circle around 50% of that wafer, everything from the center out to 50% of the wafer would be considered kingstons high end memory this is the stuff they label specifically for a machine, and the memory model name would be the KTH-ZD8000/512; now everything from the 50% to the very outter ring would be used for the generic ram KVR533D2S4/512.

After 50% of the inner wafer your chips may start to become distorted or begin to run into some small problems but they will still work, maybe not to the degree that you would use them in a mission critical server role, but to use them for a laptop you should be fine.

i just thought I would blurt out this info as I found this out after the fact that I had already ordered the generic ram.

I will repost when I get the memory and my machine my delivery is scheduled for about march 4 hopefully I will see the machine sooner.

How much did that cost you? I'm considering getting the PQI 2 X 512 from newegg.

I just received the memory a few days ago. Where did you get it at that price.
Could you provide a link to that price?
This is the link to New Egg'd price.

Wow, that is a really good deal. Would you say that memoryforeless is reliable and safe?

They are a direct from distibutor seller, when i called for the status of my order and to make sure they had the chips instock, they had actually called up kingston to verify that kingston had the memory in stock; and they did, 49 peices.

I will let you know by friday if they are reliable bacause i put my order in on Wed about 10 pm EST and should have the memory by friday casue I paid for the 2 day delivery.

The only problem I saw was in the reviews they ahd from pricegrabber.com some people are saying they try to bait and switch.

Has anyone left the factory memory in and added one new chip. I wanted to upgrade also but have been unsure why there are factory certified memories that cost 50% more. I was thinking maybe that would be the only problem if you combine the two different types of memory. I called HP India and they in a round about way told me that was the case. I think he said I could use any kind of memory whether it be pc3200 ddr2 or pc4200 ddr2 but they had to be from the same manufacturer. Glad to find this topic. There is some great info on here.

Does it matter if, for the HP ZD8000, you get DDR2 4200 with E/R or is regular going to give the same performance?

I have never used the E/R and both are made by the same company.

    Thx,

    Joe
