    Hi

I have a HP Pavilion ZD8000, Intel 4 630 3.0 gig, 80g hdd, DVD RW Lightscibe, 1680 x 1280 Brightview, Windows XP Professional SP2. I am extremely happy with the system.

    One small "issue" though:

The 630 chip is suppose to have Speedstep. There are no settings for the speedstep in the Bios F.34(latest). When I run SpeedswitchXP V1.4 both in CPU Realtime speed calculation and Windows CPU Calculation, it shows that my processor is constantly running at 100% CPU speed although the CPU load can be anything between 0% and 100%. This even occurs on "battery only" and at maximum battery savings settings. So in other words, my CPU does not "step" according to the CPU load requirements, so no speedstep. I can also confirm this by running MobileMeter, which shows my temperature constant between 55 C and 67 C depending on load. If the speedstep was active, this temperature should come down during times when the computer is idle.

This is not a "majorly big issue" for me, seeing that the computer is running as smooth as silk, no glitches and a PI 2m test of 1min 37sec min and 1m 43sec with multiple applications, virus protection etc running. The only reason i would like to get the speedstep active is to conserve battery power and the notebook overall in the long run by running at cooler temps.

I have been in contact with HP, and they just seem to sidestep the issue, plus wants me to send the notebook in for a Diagnostics, which personally i cannot afford at this stage seeing that i live in the Cayman Islands and use it for both work and play. I do not believe it is a hardware issue, but a software issue instead. As far as i can tell the latest bios softpaq does not support Speedstep, a big mistake on HP's part if true.

I would appreciate any help, and if there is someone with similar spec zd8000 that could test to see if their Speedstep is active or not. What i can gather from "told" battery life on the forums, it seems to me it is something that has been overlooked by HP, and could resolve the "heat & battery life "issue"" with these notebooks.

    Tx in advance :hp:

Go into Window's power options and change the power schemes.

Tx for the info, but have tried it before without any luck. The SppedswitchXP is actually an extension of the Power scheme that was origanilly written by ms windows for the power management, but not bundled with winxp as far as i know.
